USAID Overall USAID’s Strategic Statement (2006-<br />

and human rights; economic prosperity; and<br />

investing in human capital. It includes among<br />

its objectives ‘More effective and responsive<br />

democratic institutions and practices’<br />

Under its democracy and governance portfolio,<br />

USAID supports i. debates and surveys on the state<br />

of democracy, ii. the establishment and support for<br />

Associations of Elected Representatives ( e.g<br />

National Union Parishad Forum), iii, Children’s<br />

Councils, Transparency International, iv human rights<br />

organisations and coalitions, v. political party reform<br />

vi. Parliamentary Committee strengthening<br />

CIDA<br />

Overall CIDA’s Country Development<br />

Programme Framework (2003-8) identifies<br />

four priority sectors: basic education, primary<br />

health care, private sector development, and<br />

governance. CIDA also has governance as a<br />

cross cutting theme running through all its<br />

programmes .<br />
