3. Objectives : regarding The stated overall objective is ‘Creating an enabling<br />
CVA and wider objectives in environment for better livelihood’ for both projects. MMC’s<br />
case CVA is component of intention is more specific as stated in its mission statement, ‘<br />
broader intervention strengthening of local media through skill development and<br />
training of newsmen, social workers, opinion leaders, human<br />
rights activists and civil society members so they could play<br />
an effective role to change the existing centralised media for<br />

(i) Danida supported project:<br />
• establishment of Rural Advocacy Centres (RAC) at<br />
Union level run by local Centre Management<br />
Committees and local Teamleaders (Social Advocates),<br />
who identify local priorities for advocacy<br />
• provision of daily newspapers at the RACs to promote<br />
‘reading habit’ and bridge information gap<br />
• facilitation of quarterly ‘Meet the People’ (MTP) public<br />
meetings with local government officials<br />
• use of folk media for awareness raising at MTP<br />
• financial and capacity building support to one local<br />
journalist per RAC and promote local reporting on<br />
development issues.<br />
• establishment of Media Advocacy Network of affiliated<br />
journalists<br />
• orientation of Union Parishad (Councils) to the<br />
programme/involvement in MTP<br />
• development and dissemination of IEC materials.<br />
(ii)MJF supported project<br />
Basically the same project design as above but community<br />
focal points are called Information Centres and the emphasis<br />
is on citizen’s rights to information as well as taking up local<br />
issues for advocacy rather than strengthening the relationship<br />
between people and administration which is the focus of<br />
project (i). More information, particularly related to livelihoods<br />
(e.g crop diversification, land office charges) is available at<br />
these centres than the RAC which are primarily meeting<br />
points and for reading newspapers.<br />
