The Admissions Process and College Placement Tests<br />

Instructions for Conducting <strong>the</strong> Activity<br />

Part 1<br />

Distribute <strong>the</strong> “Learning About <strong>the</strong> Admissions Process” handout, which is an online scavenger hunt using <strong>the</strong> website<br />

www.collegeforadults.org. In small groups, ask <strong>the</strong> students to discuss possible answers to <strong>the</strong> questions as best <strong>the</strong>y can.<br />

As a class, review <strong>the</strong> groups’ answers. Have <strong>the</strong> students go online to <strong>the</strong> website to check <strong>the</strong>ir answers and fill in<br />

what <strong>the</strong>y don’t know.<br />

Part 2 – Understanding placement tests<br />

Pair up students and distribute <strong>the</strong> “Learning About College Placement Tests” handout. Ask <strong>the</strong> student pairs to discuss<br />

and answer <strong>the</strong> four questions. After <strong>the</strong> pairs have had enough time to discuss <strong>the</strong> questions, conduct a large group review<br />

of <strong>the</strong> answers.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> large group discussion you can bring out <strong>the</strong> following points:<br />

Tests for high school students that are taken before applying to a college<br />

SAT = Scholastic Aptitude Test<br />

ACT = American College Testing Assessment<br />

College placement tests determine how prepared you are to do college level work. Some students will need to brush up on<br />

reading and writing skills, some will not.<br />

• You cannot fail a placement test.<br />

• Schools typically use one of three common placement tests.<br />

• Tests can be computerized or pen/pencil.<br />

Distribute <strong>the</strong> “Types of College Placement Tests” handout. Have students read it and <strong>the</strong>n discuss which type <strong>the</strong>y think<br />

would be best for <strong>the</strong>m to take.<br />
