Instructions for Conducting <strong>the</strong> Activity<br />

On a board or flipchart paper, make two columns – Things I might need to ask or know/People and Places that can help<br />

me. Brainstorm with <strong>the</strong> class questions <strong>the</strong>y might have as <strong>the</strong>y decide what college to attend and once enrolled at a<br />

college. Then fill in <strong>the</strong> column “People who can help me.” A sample chart may look like this:<br />

Things I might need to ask or know about<br />

• Problems with keeping up with homework<br />

• Teacher talks too fast in class<br />

• Don’t understand what is expected<br />

• Need accommodations<br />

• Need extra help<br />

• Plan out courses to take<br />

• Conflict with a teacher<br />

Encourage students to share <strong>the</strong>ir experiences of meeting with people at different agencies or educational institutions<br />

and how <strong>the</strong>y advocated for <strong>the</strong>mselves or <strong>the</strong>ir families.<br />

Divide students <strong>into</strong> pairs. As a class, choose one of <strong>the</strong> people and reasons, and <strong>the</strong>n have <strong>the</strong> pairs take turns practicing<br />

what <strong>the</strong>y would say in <strong>the</strong> meeting.<br />
