Things I Am Good At<br />

Learning Objective<br />

To help students identify <strong>the</strong>ir interests and talents and how to use that information<br />

to guide educational and career decisions<br />

handouts: “Things I Am Good At,” “Skills Identification,” and “List of 246 Verbs” (optional)<br />

Instructions for Conducting <strong>the</strong> Activity<br />

Distribute <strong>the</strong> “Things I am Good At” handout. Ask each student to think about and write down answers on <strong>the</strong> chart to<br />

<strong>the</strong> items listed. Students can refer to <strong>the</strong>ir “Skills Identification” handout for listing skills used. Once students have<br />

completed <strong>the</strong> chart, <strong>the</strong>n have <strong>the</strong>m form small groups to share what <strong>the</strong>y have written.<br />

For <strong>ESOL</strong> students, you can model how to complete <strong>the</strong> handout on an overhead or on <strong>the</strong> board so that students<br />

understand what <strong>the</strong> objective is. Then pass out <strong>the</strong> first handout for students to do.<br />

Extension Activity<br />

Have students do a “Demonstration Presentation.” Ask students to select one of <strong>the</strong> three “things I could show someone<br />

else how to do.” Have each student prepare and deliver a presentation for <strong>the</strong> class. Following each presentation, ask <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r students to name <strong>the</strong> skills used in doing <strong>the</strong> presentation.<br />
