L e s s o n 1 8 Self Advocacy for College Success Learning Objective To help students learn how to advocate for their needs Materials Needed handout: “Don’t Take No for An Answer: Self Advocacy in Postsecondary Education” Vocabulary advocacy, rights, adviser, college representative SCANS Competencies Thinking Skills: Creative Thinking; Knowing How to Learn Interpersonal: Teaches Others New Skills Personal Qualities: Self-esteem Instructions for Conducting the Activity On a board or flipchart paper, make two columns – Things I might need to ask or know/People and Places that can help me. Brainstorm with the class questions they might have as they decide what college to attend and once enrolled at a college. Then fill in the column “People who can help me.” A sample chart may look like this: Things I might need to ask or know about • Problems with keeping up with homework • Teacher talks too fast in class • Don’t understand what is expected • Need accommodations • Need extra help • Plan out courses to take • Conflict with a teacher • Want to change major • Disability accommodations • Not getting the answers needed from other staff People/Places that can help me Teacher Adviser Dean • Received a notice that information is missing from application Registrar • Identifying what financial aid is available • Change in your financial situation • Problems with childcare • Need referral for supportive services Financial Aid Office Counseling Officer/Case Manager/ Student Support Center Encourage students to share their experiences of meeting with people at different agencies or educational institutions and how they advocated for themselves or their families. Divide students into pairs. As a class, choose one of the people and reasons, and then have the pairs take turns practicing what they would say in the meeting.
