TEESTA CANAL FALL HYDEL PROJECT
INTRODUCTION
Teesta Canal Fall Hydel project consists of three Power Stations. Power Stn.-I at Leusipukri, Power Station-II
at Haptiagach and Power Station-III at Bholagach. Power Station-I is in the District of Darjeeling whereas
Power Station-II & III are in the District of Uttar Dinajpur District. All the three Power Stations are low headed
Canal Fall Project of West Bengal State Electricity Board. Each of the three Power Station is having capacity
of 22.5 MW (3 units × 7.5 MW). Thus the total capacity of three Power Stations is 67.5 MW. As per Detailed
Project Report, the project is supposed to get a maximum of 330 cumecs of water through the Mahananda
Main Canal of Irrigation and Waterways Directorate, Govt. of West Bengal. But actually it has got 60-75
cumecs of water only in the months of August, 06, September, 06 and October, 06 during 2005-06. The nonavailability
of water through MMC for the period of March, 06 to July, 06 is due to maintenance of Mahananda
Main Canal by I&WD (canal shutdown started from 24.02.06 and withdrawn on 31.07.06 and again is under
shutdown w.e.f. 01.11.06 and still continuing).
BASIC FUNCTIONS :
The basic function of this project is to generate power with the avilable water released by I&WD and the
generation of power is solely dependent on the avilability of water, released by I&WD through the Mahananda
Main Canal. The generated power is evacuated to 132 KV grid through 2 nos. of 16 MVA 6.6 KV/ 132 KV
transformers installed at each of the 3 Power Stations which are located at three different places.
SCADA SYSTEM :
The work of implementation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA) at Power Station-
I has been completed and that for Power Station II and Power Station III are in progress. All the three units of
Power Station-I are now controlled from the Operators Consoles placed in the Control Room and the system
is generating all the data of the entire system at the Power Station. The SCADA for Power Station- II and
Power Station- III are also under implementation in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology,
Govt. of India. The work for installation of SCADA at Power Station- II & Power Station- III is almost complete.
From 1st November, 2006 the project is under shutdown condition due to non- availability of water for generation
as Irrigation & Waterways Directorate has undertaken repair and maintenance work of the damaged
embankment and as informed by I&WD that this shutdown would remain upto 30.06.2007.
