DRIVE-IN
CONFERENCE
Continued from page 53
pointing out on other ads that they had
followed that theme throughout the enlire
campaign. It wa.s al-so suggested that
in reopening the drive-in for the first engagement,
exhibitors should give something
extra to the children, and not forget the
adults. This year they are giving the children
comic books and balloons, and the
adults a very nice plastic whiskbroom, properly
marked that it came from the drive-in.
A VARIETY OF ADVERTISING MEDIUMS
He also said that in opening the drivein,
they are using fireworks in the form of
aerial bombs. Other advertising mediums
were discussed and it was found that a
drive-in theatre, whether in a large or
small town, got very satisfactory results
from mailing programs directly to the
homes. Also, sound trucks with two, threesheet
boards—one board telling of the price
and policy, the other telling the current
attraction—radio jingles, and spot announcements
on the radio have been very
successful. Your radio station can acquire
this platter through its regular service and
all you will have to pay for is the spots.
Other promotions that have been proven
valuable throughout the year are: "Get
acquainted" passes, fireworks for all holidays,
and anniversary parties with special
favors celebrating the occasion.
Allied President S. J. Goldberg explained
to the group about the national campaign
for drive-ins, which is being headed by Jack
Braunagle of Commonwealth Theatres in
Kansas City. He showed the 24-sheet, window
cards and bumper strips that are
available on an actual cost basis, and urged
the drive-in owners to cooperate in participating
in this campaign. It was decided
that the drive-in owners would go back to
see how many locations for 24-sheets they
could secure and will notify the Association
office so the 24-sheets can be ordered
at one time.
A NEW BUILDING CODE
The Wisconsin Industrial Commission
Building Code for Drive-ins was explained
by Ben Marcus of Marcus Theatres. He
mentioned that a lot of time and effort has
been spent in preparing this code followed
by a series of hearings. As of this writing,
the code is presently on the desk of the
commissioners for their signatures to be
affixed: and after being publicized for 30
days in the state paper, it will become law.
(The proposed code was published on pages
28-29, Modern Theatre, Feb. 2. 1952.)
Marcus stated the purpose of this code
was not to make things tougher for the
legitimate drive-in, but it would eliminate
undesirable drive-in structures and "flyby-night"
operators who are unfair competition
and give the theatre business a
bad reputation. No part of this code will
greatly bother the present drive-in operator,
or any future construction. After the
