BALTIMORE — Marks of affection and
esteem were bestowed in generous measure
upon Lauritz Garman on the recent occasion
of his retirement as president of the Allied
Motion Picture Theatre Owners of Maryland.
His successor Leon Back, joined in the tributes.
Garman was guest of honor at a dinner attended
friends from far and wide which was held
at the Variety Club atop of the Stanley Theatre.
Frank H. Durkee who was president in
The chief speaker of the evening was Abram
F. Myers, attorney for the National Allied
Motion Picture Owners and a former member
starting with his birth in Denmark. He
of letters; each letter came from an associate
of Garman's in the theatrical field.
In accepting the gifts, Garman said: "We
hear lots of talk about 'public relations' these
days but I feel that human relations are much
more important to our welfare and happiness.
We would do better to place more emphasis
on the brotherhood we talk about and extoll
in our pictures. It is the first rung in the
ladder of real success," he concluded.
Jack Whittle, chairman of the dinner committee,
on behalf of the group, presented Garman
a wrist watch, and a traveling bag also
750-Seat Lyric Theatre
ATLANTIC CITY—The Lyric Theatre, 42-
year-old house in the heart of the downtown
district, has been purchased by Samuel A.
Tannenbaum, owner of the Surf Theatre.
Purchase was made from William Ford, who
operated the Lyric for 32 of its 42 years as
a film house.
One of the oldest houses in the city, the
Lyric had been remodeled by Ford a number
of times, and in 1945 it was virtually rebuilt
following a fire. It has a seating capacity of
750. Midnight shows of Italian opera films
proved to be one of the popular stunts tried
in recent years. The house is now closed.
