1,400-Seat Plaza Theatre Opens in Memphis Suburb First night's profits from the Plaza opening went to the East Memphis Kiwanis club for its work with retarded children. KULL ADAMS By MEMPHIS—Memphis' largest and most elegant suburban theatre, the Plaza, was launched with a two-day ceremony. The opening night attendance was by invitation. Around 1.000 guests from newspapers, radio stations, tradepapers and the motion picture industry attended. The delighted exclamations from visitors roaming about the greencarpeted, modernistic and curving lobby were inspired by the handsome showhouse. The second night was given to a show sponsored by the Kast Memphis Kiwanis club which raised several thousand dollars for its program of helping retarded children. Opening night ceremonies were brief. Tony Tedesco, representing Filmrow, introduced Robert W. Lessley, manager, who briefly welcomed first-nighters. He then introduced Mr. and Mrs. Augustine Cianciolo, who operate the new 1,400-seat Plaza under a long-term lease. The Cianciolos also own and operate the Rosemary and Luciann. The Plaza opened with a first run film, "The Lady Says No." Shows start at 7 p. m. Monday through Friday and at 2 p. m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is 60 cents. The drive-under marquee is topped by a 45-foot tower with the theatre's name in neon on both sides. Behind the tower are large translucent glass panels through which ever-changing patterns of color are visible. The long main lobby i.s indirectly lighted and features a large, modernistic refreshment counter. De luxe seats in the auditorium are fully upholstered. There are 35 seats and a number of baby beds in the glass-enclosed cryroom. A party room, with its own reception room, which will seat 35, has its own refreshment serving The exterior of the Plaza looked like this on opening night. Note the ample on-street parking space in front of the house, which is in addition to a 330-car parking lot, now being enlarged to accommodate 1,500 cars. facilities and it's completely glass-enclosed. This room is to be chartered for private parties. Both the ladies' and men's restrooms are upholstered in leather and feature floor-to-ceiling mirrors. All walls are curved to break up sound waves. The color scheme is green, in three different shades. The projection room is .spacious, with Century equipment. Projectors are water cooled like drive-in theatre projectors. In addition to standard 35mm equipment, the Plaza also has 16mm projectors which may be used in showing commercial and industrial films. The theatre will b€ chartered during the day to firms which want to show such films. The screen is a no-distortion Cycloramic, 25x22 feet. The exterior is equally attractive with its buff-and-cream marble sidewalk, fluted stainless steel columns and 45-foot name tower. Best of all, says Cianciolo, and on this patrons agree, the Plaza has its own private parking lot which now accommodates 350 cars and is being enlarged to take care of 1,500 when it is finished. More Newsreels Shown in Dublin Since the beginning of 1952 the major motion picture theatres in Dublin and a number of the suburban theatres are requesting more newsreels in their program.
