Indoor Operators Fail
To Shutter Drive-ins
BEAVER, PA.—Indoor theatre owners this
week rebuffed in an attempt to enlist the district
attorney's aid in a campaign against
drive-in theatres. Basis for the request for
the commonwealth's aid in bottling up the
outdoor theatres is the 1935 law calling for
local option on Sunday operation of theatres.
Beaver valley managers of indoor theatres
asked District Attorney Richard P. Steward
to close drive-ins which operate on Sundays
in communities which have not voted in referendum
to repeal the old blue law regarding
entertainment on Sunday.
In all the county's larger communities except
Beaver this has been done. Only one
outdoor theatre in Beaver county, the Tusca,
is situated in a political subdivision which
has approved Sunday shows. Steward informed
complainants that he will act only if
information is made against the drive-in by
some interested party outside his office.
Indoor theatre managers balked at making
information against the outdoor theatres.
J. C. Lund, who manages the Aliquippa theatres,
publicly charged the attorney with failing
to assume the responsibilities of his office.
Several indoor theatres in Beaver county
are preparing to close because of the influence
of outdoor theatres and television. In
one large community, three grocei-y chain operators
seek to take up the lease on one large
theatre. In some cases, indoor theatre operators
are dickering with employes for pay
cuts because of rising costs and falling receipts.
Explosion Causes Panic
PITTSBURGH—A terrific gas explosion
wrecked a row of connecting houses in the
Hill district late last Thursday night (24),
injuring ten persons and causing a panic in
the nearby Rhumba Theatre. More than 100
patrons of the theatre fled when the blast
virtually demolished one residence in the rear
of the Rhumba, operated by Jake Soltz and
son Sidney Soltz. Two suffered injuries when
they fell during the stampede for exits and
were removed to a nearby hospital.
