Expectations of congregants vary according to understanding and
experience of prior church life. The older generation tend to seek a caring,
hospitable minister’s wife who supports her husband by leading some aspect
of the church where he is not gifted, like worship, for example. She may also
be known as the homemaker, mother and chairman of the women’s league.
The younger congregants often seek a counsellor, teacher or role
model. It is rare to find a congregant who is unaware of whom the pastor’s
wife is. However, the more modern Christian, when asked, will not expect
anything from the pastor’s wife within the life of the church, it is understood
that she is involved wherever she is needed.
Few wives indicated that they felt appreciated for the work they do or
for the work done by their husbands. Most wives were not sure if they were
appreciated for their role in the church. This may indicate that they are not
very visible in their involvement within the church or that many of the
congregants simply do not seek out to thank or support their pastoral couples.
