VEN Analysis<br />
This analysis sets the priorities for selecti<strong>on</strong>, procurement and use<br />
according to the potential health impact <strong>of</strong> the each and every <strong>drugs</strong>.<br />
VEN analysis assigns each drug <strong>on</strong> the Essential Medicines List to <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />
the following three categories.<br />
V- Vital <strong>drugs</strong> are potentially lifesaving and crucial for providing<br />
basic health services. Should be available at all times.<br />
Eg:- Sodium Chloride 0.9%IV infusi<strong>on</strong><br />
Dextrose 5% IV infusi<strong>on</strong><br />
Anti snake venum serum<br />
Anti Rabies serum<br />
Anti Rabies vaccine<br />
E- Essential <strong>drugs</strong> are effective against less severe but<br />
nevertheless significant forms <strong>of</strong> illness but are not<br />
absolutely vital to providing basic health care.<br />
Eg:- Paracetamol Tablets<br />
Amoxicillin Capsules<br />
N- N<strong>on</strong> essential <strong>drugs</strong> are used for minor illnesses are <strong>of</strong><br />
questi<strong>on</strong>able efficacy or have a comparatively high cost for a<br />
marginal therapeutic advantage.<br />
Eg:- Nystatin<br />
In the annual estimati<strong>on</strong> process particular attenti<strong>on</strong> should be paid to V<br />
and E <strong>drugs</strong>. Whenever there is a shortage <strong>of</strong> funds V and E <strong>drugs</strong> will be<br />
the last eliminated from the list.<br />
As the nati<strong>on</strong>al formulary or Essential Medicines List is updated and as<br />
public health priorities change the VEN categories should be reviewed and<br />
up dated. Any new drug added to the list should be categorized<br />
appropriately.<br />
