Stock C<strong>on</strong>trol Procedures at the Indoor Dispensary (IDD)<br />
13. As so<strong>on</strong> as the <strong>drugs</strong> are received from the main drug stores <strong>of</strong> the<br />
instituti<strong>on</strong> by the IDD, the quantity <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> received should be checked with<br />
the amounts noted as “issued” in the drug register and verified as correct.<br />
14. Only a week’s supply <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> should be issued to the units/wards, in<br />
additi<strong>on</strong> to a buffer stock <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e week supply which should always be<br />
available in the unit/ward. Availability <strong>of</strong> excess quantities <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> in the<br />
units/wards will cause pilferage and should be avoided.<br />
15. The pharmacists issuing <strong>drugs</strong> to the respective units (wards, operating<br />
theatres etc.) in the instituti<strong>on</strong> should ensure that;<br />
(a) the requests received from the respective units for the issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong><br />
are in order, reas<strong>on</strong>able and the books are balanced properly ;<br />
(b) the balanced stocks <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> in the respective units c<strong>on</strong>form to<br />
guidelines issued <strong>on</strong> minimum stocks to be kept ;<br />
(c) the balances stated in the request books are correct ; and<br />
(d) the issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> has been authorized by the Head <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Instituti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
16. At the time <strong>of</strong> re-ordering, the empty c<strong>on</strong>tainers/vials/spools <strong>of</strong> fast<br />
moving expensive items should be returned to the issuing <strong>of</strong>ficer when<br />
requesting for new stocks. These are classified as follows:<br />
(a) Drugs with abuse potential.<br />
Eg: All narcotic injectable preparati<strong>on</strong> such as morphine, pethidine,<br />
fentanyl<br />
(b) High value items.<br />
Eg: Certain anaesthetic <strong>drugs</strong> such as is<strong>of</strong>lurine, halothane, thiopent<strong>on</strong>e<br />
sodium, bupivacaine, lidocaine and injectable antibiotics such as<br />
cephalosporins, ampicillin, cloxacillin, benzylpenicillin.<br />
(c) Empty cans over 2 liter volume and bottles over 500 ml volume.<br />
