QUALITY ASSURANCE OF DRUGS AT PERIPHERAL UNITS,<br />

DISTRICT HOSPITALS, BASE AND PROVINCIAL HOSPITALS.<br />

With the establishment <strong>of</strong> the new Nati<strong>on</strong>al Drug Quality Assurance<br />

Laboratory (NDQAL), it has been decided to deploy a more effective quality<br />

assurance system for <strong>drugs</strong> prescribed for patients at Peripheral Units, District<br />

Hospitals, Base and Provincial Hospitals. This is in keeping with some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

proposals agreed up<strong>on</strong> at the Objectives Oriented Planning Workshop for Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Drug Quality Assurance Laboratory.<br />

In this respect, it is proposed to select <strong>drugs</strong> for quality assurance testing<br />

using to ABC analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> and giving preference firstly to those in A Group. The<br />

first twenty <strong>drugs</strong> in the A Group have been selected for initial assessment. The<br />

Divisi<strong>on</strong>al Pharmacists and Drug Inspectors in Provinces/Regi<strong>on</strong>s (in additi<strong>on</strong> to the<br />

Officers <strong>of</strong> the NDQAL) may be instructed to collect and send samples <strong>of</strong> those <strong>drugs</strong><br />

for quality assurance.<br />

The specific <strong>drugs</strong> to be collected and sent for quality assurance will be<br />

decided by the Director <strong>of</strong> the NDQAL and communicated at intervals to these<br />

Officers through provincial/regi<strong>on</strong>al Directors.<br />

The procedure for collecti<strong>on</strong> and sending <strong>of</strong> samples <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> <strong>of</strong> suspected<br />

quality and <strong>on</strong> complaints made by the prescribers, to the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Drug Quality<br />

Assurance Laboratory from Government Instituti<strong>on</strong>s and at the requests <strong>of</strong><br />

Provincial/Regi<strong>on</strong>al Directors is indicated in Annexure I and the procedure for<br />

collecti<strong>on</strong> and sending <strong>of</strong> samples <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> from Government Instituti<strong>on</strong>s at the<br />

request <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Drug Quality Assurance Laboratory for the<br />

Quality Assurance Programme is indicated in Annexure II.<br />
