Items so received should be taken into a register and disposed <strong>of</strong> periodically<br />

with the approval <strong>of</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> the Instituti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In the case <strong>of</strong> dressings, especially in Teaching, Provincial, District<br />

General/Base and Divisi<strong>on</strong>al Hospitals , a central distributi<strong>on</strong> system should<br />

be adopted.<br />

17. When authorizing issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>drugs</strong> <strong>on</strong> the register, the Head <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Instituti<strong>on</strong> should ensure that the issues are m<strong>on</strong>itored and c<strong>on</strong>trolled to avoid<br />

overstocking at the user level.<br />

18. Drugs should be issued to the respective units weekly according to a roster<br />

prepared in c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> with the units c<strong>on</strong>cerned. However <strong>drugs</strong> shall also<br />

be issued <strong>on</strong> emergency requests as and when necessary, to avoid shortages.<br />

19. All the normal procedures recommended for indenting, accounting etc. <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>drugs</strong> should be adhered to, to the extent applicable.<br />

20. As <strong>drugs</strong> are issued to the OPD patients and the clinic patients from the<br />

outdoor dispensary, in additi<strong>on</strong> to the procedures regarding the receipt <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>drugs</strong> from the drug stores as given in under1-4 paragraphs the following<br />

procedures should be followed.<br />

21. A list <strong>of</strong> specimen signatures <strong>of</strong> all authorized prescribing <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />

authenticated by the Head <strong>of</strong> the Instituti<strong>on</strong> should be available with the<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers dispensing <strong>drugs</strong> at the OPD and clinics. These <strong>of</strong>ficers should make<br />

sure, before issuing <strong>drugs</strong> to the patients, that the prescripti<strong>on</strong>s have been<br />

signed by the authorized prescribing <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>on</strong>ly. The Chief Pharmacist will<br />

do a random check <strong>of</strong> about 30 prescripti<strong>on</strong>s fortnightly to verify the<br />

genuineness <strong>of</strong> the prescripti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

22. OPD patients shall be issued <strong>drugs</strong> sufficient for not more than three days<br />

but in the case <strong>of</strong> antibiotics, the full prescribed course should be issued.<br />

23. If further prescripti<strong>on</strong> is given at the next visit <strong>of</strong> the patient, it should be<br />

elicited from the patient that the <strong>drugs</strong> dispensed earlier had been fully<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumed.<br />
