Death in the house / outside a Medical Instituti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

1. Notify the case to the relevant Medical Officer <strong>of</strong> Health immediately.<br />

2. Medical Officer certifying the death should inform the cor<strong>on</strong>er and<br />

request for a post-mortem.<br />

The rest <strong>of</strong> the steps to be followed are as in the instituti<strong>on</strong>al setting.<br />

General Measures<br />

1. The body should not be handled unnecessarily. Inform the relatives to<br />

dispose, bury or cremate as early as possible.<br />

2. Embalming <strong>of</strong> body is not recommended. However, if it is essential the<br />

undertaker should be advised to wear protective clothing, mask, gloves<br />

and boots during preparati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the body to prevent c<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

3. Sealing the c<strong>of</strong>fin is not required.<br />

4. Relatives should be str<strong>on</strong>gly discouraged from embracing or hugging<br />

the body.<br />

5. The preparati<strong>on</strong> area and any place or item, which is c<strong>on</strong>taminated or<br />

could possibly be c<strong>on</strong>taminated with body secreti<strong>on</strong>s, should also be<br />

disinfected with freshly prepared 10% sodium hypochlorite soluti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

6. The patient's clothing, bed linen, and other pers<strong>on</strong>al items should be<br />

disinfected with soap water and boiled before reuse.<br />

7. Post Exposure Treatment (PET) is recommended for the bystander(s)<br />

who nursed the patient and who had sexual c<strong>on</strong>tact with the deceased<br />

within 14 days prior to the <strong>on</strong>set <strong>of</strong> clinical signs and symptoms. No<br />

PET is required for ward and Judicial Medical Officer staff. However,<br />

specialized advice could be sought for any accidental exposure to body<br />

secreti<strong>on</strong>s. (Please follow the instructi<strong>on</strong>s given <strong>on</strong> PET, Preventi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Rabies by Anti Rabies Post Exposure Therapy, General Circular No 01-<br />

0112002 dated 01 January 2002 by the Director General <strong>of</strong> Health<br />

Services)<br />
