It is essential that all instituti<strong>on</strong>s using RIG and ARV should send a m<strong>on</strong>thly<br />

return (Annexure I) to C<strong>on</strong>sultant Virologist, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Rabies and Vaccine<br />

QC, MRI, Director, Public Health Veterinary Services, 6th Floor, 555/5,<br />

Elvitigala Mw, Colombo 05 and to the Director/MSD, before collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the<br />

next m<strong>on</strong>ths vaccine supplies from MSD/RMSD. Any adverse reacti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

following rabies PET should be reported to Director/MSD, D/MT &S and<br />

Virologist/Dept. Rabies, MRI.<br />

Method <strong>of</strong> sensitivity testing (ST) for Equine Rabies Immunoglobulin<br />

(ERIG)<br />

C<strong>on</strong>trol - Inoculate 0.1 ml <strong>of</strong> N. saline intradermaly (ID) <strong>on</strong> flexor aspect <strong>of</strong><br />

the forearm. Test - Prepare a 1: 10 diluti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> rabies equine serum with sterile<br />

N. Saline and inoculate 0.1 ml intradermaly (ID) <strong>on</strong> flexor aspect <strong>of</strong> the<br />

opposite forearm.<br />

Separate needles and syringes should be used for each patient. Patient is kept<br />

under observati<strong>on</strong> and the ST should be read after 20 minutes. Examine for<br />

itching, indurati<strong>on</strong> or urticaria or any systemic effects <strong>of</strong> anaphylaxis.<br />

Indurati<strong>on</strong> over 10mm in diameter, large area <strong>of</strong> erythema or any systemic<br />

reacti<strong>on</strong> should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered as positive ST.<br />

Drug <strong>of</strong> choice in anaphylaxis is 1:1000 adrenaline 0.5mg given<br />

intramuscularly (lM) or subcutaneously (SC) immediately. Mild sensitivity<br />

reacti<strong>on</strong>s could be managed with antihistamine therapy. Oral or parenteral<br />

steroids should not be administered as it depresses the immune resp<strong>on</strong>se.<br />
