Črni Vrh was once renowned for its cottage industries (barrel making, bucket
making, woodenware), but now it is oriented toward tourism and farming. The
Črni Vrh plateau is a popular excursion point, and its small ski center and trails
for cross-country skiing and sledding are particularly inviting. Visitors who stop
at the Pr’ Mark farm are offered dried meat products typical of Črni Vrh (also
for sale), roast pork with žlikrofi (a sort of potato ravioli), and lamb in sauce.
They can also rent skis and bicycles and get directions to the mountain lodge
on Mount Javorniki, to Divje jezero lake, to Mount Belca, the Franja Partisan
Hospital, the observatory, the interesting Klavže dams on the Idrijca River . . .
Situated on Medvedje Brdo (Bear Hill), the Šinkovc excursion farm has a
marvelous view of the Julian and Kamniške Alps, the Karavanke Mountains,
the Polhov Gradec hills, the Ljubljana barje moor, and the Trnovski forests.
The hostess serves a variety of traditional delicacies such as homemade salami,
pršut (prosciutto), pork, beef, rabbit, young goat, Idrija-style žlikrofi, and good
white wines or homemade apple juice. The Notranjska and Logaška Mountain
Footpath runs past the farm and there is a bicycle trail to the marshy Žejna
dolina Valley where you can find a rare flesh-eating plant (Sundew). Places worth
seeing nearby include Hotedršica, where you can see a mill built over a sinkhole
and a traditional “black” kitchen, Vrhnika and the Museum of Technology in
Bistra, Idrija with its mercury mine museum and lacemakers, and very close to
the farm, the 11th-century Church of Sv. Katerina.
If we say that the farm lies within Triglav National Park, you can almost
imagine it: among meadows beside a forest with a view of the mountains.
And in truth, the Radovna Valley lies between Mount Pokljuka and Mount
Mežaklja seventeen kilometers from Kranjska Gora and the same distance
from Bled. The female side of the family makes sure that pleasant aromas waft
from the kitchen (their specialties include homemade pork and sausages in
winter, žganci, buckwheat krapi, dry sausage preserved in minced lard, smoked
ham), while the men make sure you will have fresh honey on your bread and
that you won’t be bored. They will take you—sometimes via hay wagon—
along the Cultural Heritage Trail, you can hike to the valleys of Krma, Kot, or
Vrata (Peričnik Waterfall), and of course the farm is an ideal starting point for
climbing in the Julian Alps and on Mount Triglav.
The farm is situated in one of Slovenia’s most beautiful villages on the sunny
side of Karavanke Mountains with a view of the Julian Alps. At the Pr’ Potovčn’k
farm, they boast that they prepare medicinal herbs that cure even the most
stubborn problems, and the father is especially proud on his selection of liqueurs
and brandies, which he bottles elegantly for you to take home. They will gladly
take you on a tractor ride to the nearby mountain pasture or invite you to
join them in haymaking. If you are inclined toward mountaineering, you can
climb the nearby peaks in the Julian Alps (Mount Triglav) and the Karavanke
Mountains (Mount Kepa). Nature lovers can seek out peace and quiet in the
Vrata and Krma valleys, while bicycling enthusiasts can ride to Kranjska Gora
and Planica or through the Radovna Valley to Lake Bled.
