The Cigoj family's farm was built in 1830, while the date over the stone entrance
portal reads 1811. Visitors to the farm can enjoy traditional and almost
forgotten specialities of the Primorska region such as pork tenderloin stuffed
with prosciutto and wrapped in a vine leaf, local rabbit served with polenta, roast
salami in a wine sauce, jota, and so on. End your meal with Vipava-style strudels
or dumplings, and do not forget to try the excellent home-cured meat products.
Set off on foot to see the local sights, or visit Postojna, Škocjan, Lipica, Štanjel,
the Soča or Sveta Gora. By arrangement, visitors can help with the grape harvest,
making and bottling wine or, in winter, making sausages at slaughter-time.
The Malovščevo Farm which lies in the village of Vitovlje surrounded by vineyards
and forest, was the first open farm in the Goriška region and has long been famous for
its homely welcome. A visit to the farm is a wonderful gastronomic experience that
will tantalise your taste buds with the specialities of the Vipava area, marvellously
complemented by a fine selection of wines. Specialities include home-cured ham
dried in the Bora, the wind that blows across the Karst, salami, home-made bread,
minestrone, barley soup, genuine Vipava jota with sausage and ribs, omelettes,
gnocchi, bleki, goulash, polenta with ham, and side dishes and vegetables typical of
this region. Those with a sweet tooth can try apple, plum and peach strudels, cheese
strudel and other desserts. Activities for guests include guided tours of the wine
cellar with wine-tastings, grape-picking and the selection of the Queen of the Grape
Harvest, St Martin's Day celebrations and, on Saturdays, country evenings with
music and dancing. Visitors can also set off to visit the church on a solitary hill above
the village of Vitovlje, or walk the Vitovlje Trail. Also interesting are walks down
country lanes, through vineyards and over fields, to a beautiful lake called Vogršček.
open to guests:
The Štanfel farm is situated in the idyllic little village of Podsabotin in Goriška Brda, the first village you
will come across when you arrive to Brda. It will take you only a ten minute drive from Nova Gorica
and you will already arrive to Podsabotin, far from the hustle and bustle of urban life. You hosts will
treat you to top quality wine and delicious food prepared according to old recipes. The specialty of
the farm are cured meat products (prosciutto, homemade salami, smoked shoulder butt, pancetta,
sausages), prepared by the owner Štefan following old recipes that were passed from generation to
generation. They also serve delicious traditional dishes of the region such as gnocchi, frtalja (a kind
of omelette), bleki (homemade pasta), white polenta, venison goulash, grape bread, fig bread, light
desserts… The hosts thoughtfully pair the food with chosen wines from their own stone clad wine
cellar. Their specialty are sparkling wines to which Štefan, the host, pays particular attention. The farm
is an excellent starting point for exploring the beauties of Goriška Brda. The hosts organize tours of
their wine cellar with wine tasting and a demonstration of opening a bottle of sparkling wine using a
special sword. They will be happy to invite you to go trekking with donkeys to the nearby Sabotin hill
or to organize a night walk with torches. The proximity of nature and of a murmuring stream near the
farm will make sure that you will forget your everyday problems and unwind for a while.
