You can find the Žagar Tourist Farm in the small village of Damelj in Bela krajina,
situated in the heart of Kolpa Regional Park, only a kilometer and a half from the
southernmost point of Slovenia. They will serve you home-baked bread, dried
meat items, buckwheat žganci, lamb, or sucking pig from the traditional open
oven. These delicacies can be washed down with delicious wine, while those who
prefer non-alcoholic drinks will be delighted by their homemade apple juice.
They also have delicious homemade brandy and liqueurs prepared according
to old recipes. With prior notice the farm accepts individuals or groups up to
fifty people for Sunday lunches or celebrations. Only a hundred meters from
the farm is the peaceful and warm Kolpa River and one of its most picturesque
natural swimming areas. The farm rents mountain bikes, canoes, and rafts and
organizes trips down the Kolpa - not to be missed if you want to feel the magic
of the river and enjoy an unforgettable memory.
The tourist farm Lukčeva domačija is found in the village of Vrh pri Fari. The farm
offers a wonderful view of the Kostel Castle, Kolpa river canyon and surrounding
forests that give the landscape a special charm. The owners grow fruit (apples, pears,
plums) and hazelnuts on the farm. They also make juice out of organically grown fruit
as well as excellent brandy (“rakija”). Naturally, they respect and continue the culinary
traditions of the region, offering their guests typical dishes such as meat and potato
stew (čuspajs), various meat dishes, cured meat products (kostelski želodec), desserts
and homemade bread. Since your host Albin Likar is also an accomplished archer (he
competes in tournaments and gives archery lessons), you can try your hand at archery as
well. There are a lot of grassy spaces around the house where children can play and adults
can relax. In the immediate surroundings there are many cozy corners and terraces for
daydreaming or for relaxing in cool shade. Since the area around Kostel is quite varied,
there is a wide range of things to do in your free time; you can try archery, hiking, cycling,
volleyball, swimming or rafting on the Kolpa river which can be organized with the help
of your friendly hosts. They can also prepare day trips for you.
You will find the Novak farm in Sadinja vas pri Dvoru, on a hill overlooking the Krka
river. In a beautiful natural setting you will enjoy food prepared in a unique way. If
you wish, you can accompany your meals with good wine, which is always plentiful
in the cellar of your host, Boris Novak. The hostess Miriam is a great connoisseur
of wild herbs, which she likes to add to her dishes. Menus are always suited to the
season. Therefore, depending on the time of year, you might be treated to dishes
such as strudel with black trumpet mushrooms with olive oil and meadow herbs. The
wine that is served alongside food is always carefully chosen, with the awareness that
it must complement the taste of the food. The Novak farm offers accommodation
in several nicely furnished rooms in which you will sleep like a baby after a delicious
dinner. If you decide to stay for a while, don't miss the opportunity to swim or relax
in the thermal spa Dolenjske toplice, to go canoeing or fishing in the nearby Krka
river, to visit Otočec, Kočevski Rog, or simply to go on a hike in the surrounding hills
and forests. Children will have a lot of fun as well. They can sleep in the hay loft of the
nearby kozolec, run around spacious meadows or play table tennis.
open to guests:
The Pri Deželanu farm is situated on a hill with a lovely view of the entire
Mirna Valley, the Gorjanci and Snežnik mountains, and almost twenty hilltop
churches. The friendly Dolenjska region is the place to relax and enjoy great
company, as well as great wine, since there are plenty of vineyards. Next to the
farmhouse is a wine cellar thought to be over 160 years old, and guests rarely
leave it thirsty. Along with homemade wine, home-grown and wholesomely
prepared food is served. Guests can choose from a selection of hearty dishes that
include sausages, homemade bread, and a variety of traditional Slovene sweets
such as walnut potica. Top it all off with a luxurious glass of brandy. Nearby is
the Šmarješke Toplice Health Resort with naturally heated mineral water baths
and both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Or tour the many old churches
in the region and watch the ancient custom of the blessing of the horses at the
Sv. Štefan church.
