The “Monitoring Informationswirtschaft” Kernbericht quotes a number <strong>of</strong> estimates emerging from<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r studies about <strong>the</strong> labour market position in Germany. These include:<br />

• Breakdown <strong>of</strong> employment within ICT (in 2000);<br />

- Manufacturing <strong>of</strong> Communications equipment: 12%<br />

- Manufacturing <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice machinery and Data Processing equipment: 14%<br />

- Communications Services: 32%<br />

- S<strong>of</strong>tware and IT services: 42%<br />

• Fraction <strong>of</strong> ICT and Telecomms jobs not filled in early 2001: 13%;<br />

• Number <strong>of</strong> (young?) people emerging from <strong>the</strong> “Dual” (apprenticeship) system into IT<br />

occupations in 2000: 7,000;<br />

• Percentage <strong>of</strong> employment in Computing occupations represented by immigrant workers from<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r EU Member States: 1.8%;<br />

• Percentage <strong>of</strong> employment in Computing occupations represented by immigrant workers from<br />

outside <strong>the</strong> EU: 2.2%;<br />

• 79% <strong>of</strong> immigrants entering ICT practitioner work between 1998 and 1999 had tertiary education,<br />

as against only 37% <strong>of</strong> “domestic” entrants;<br />

• Remuneration <strong>of</strong> senior IT staff in 2000 was estimated as follows:<br />

- IT Director: 210,000DM<br />

- IT Manager: 174,000DM<br />

- Applications Development Manager: 152,000DM<br />

- Network Manager: 148,000DM<br />

- IT Operations Manager: 147,000DM<br />

- Information Systems Manager: 143,000DM<br />

- Database Manager: 142,000DM<br />

- Office Communications Manager: 138,000DM<br />

- Data Preparations Manager: 135,000DM<br />

• Within Europe, salary levels for IT management were felt to be highest in Germany and<br />

Switzerland;<br />

• Monthly Issue <strong>of</strong> “Green Cards” (predominantly to incoming ICT workers) was running, in <strong>the</strong><br />

Autumn <strong>of</strong> 2000, at 1,364 (August), 776 (September), 702 (October), and 600 (November);<br />

• The number <strong>of</strong> Informatics students more than doubled in <strong>the</strong> Winter semester <strong>of</strong> 2000, from<br />

10,000 to some 24,000;<br />

• Over 50% <strong>of</strong> all IT management positions are held by those with secondary education, whereas<br />

this is not true for those in technical positions.<br />
