Employment Status:<br />
Probably <strong>the</strong> most interesting characteristic <strong>of</strong> Employment status is <strong>the</strong> split between those employed<br />
and those self-employed. Figure 11 shows <strong>the</strong> fraction <strong>of</strong> Computing Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in employment<br />
represented by those self-employed (with or without employees).<br />

As can be seen, <strong>the</strong> fraction <strong>of</strong> self-employed “independent contractors” is largest in <strong>the</strong> United Kingdom,<br />
with getting on for twice as many (in proportion) as in Germany. The figures in Sweden seem to have<br />
changed ra<strong>the</strong>r dramatically in 1999, but <strong>the</strong> variations over time in Germany and in <strong>the</strong> UK seem broadly<br />
“in phase”. Interestingly, <strong>the</strong>re are clear falls in <strong>the</strong> percentage in Britain and Ireland between 1999 and<br />
2000 (assumed to be influenced by Y2K date-change activity), whereas <strong>the</strong> fraction <strong>of</strong> contractors rose<br />
over that period in Sweden and Germany.<br />
