The UK e-skills NTO managed a significant employer survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “ICT Pr<strong>of</strong>essional” labour market<br />

carried out by NOP Research at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> 2001, and its conclusions (based in particular on<br />

telephone interviews with nearly 4,000 employers <strong>of</strong> more than 5 employees) were reported in early<br />

2002 as “e-skills 21: IT and Communications Pr<strong>of</strong>essional in <strong>the</strong> UK”. The most significant findings<br />

were:<br />

• An estimate <strong>of</strong> more than 900,000 ICT pr<strong>of</strong>essionals working within some 160,000 establishments<br />

in <strong>the</strong> UK (early 2001) (this figure includes both Telecomms. practitioners and – as indicated<br />

below – several occupations beyond <strong>the</strong> core technical ones);<br />

• These broke down into six main categories considered (a new occupational classification,<br />

indicated to be drawn from <strong>the</strong> Skills Framework for <strong>the</strong> Information Age (SFIA)), with<br />

approximate numbers as follows:<br />

- “Internal Operations Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals” (340,000)<br />

- “Development Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals” (236,000)<br />

- “External Customer Services Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals” (110,000)<br />

- “ICT Sales and <strong>Market</strong>ing Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals” (100,000)<br />

- “Strategy and Planning Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals” (68,000)<br />

- “O<strong>the</strong>r Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals” (54,000)<br />

• Over ¾ <strong>of</strong> ICT Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals were found to have 3 or more years experience in <strong>the</strong>ir current roles;<br />

• Generic skills and experience appeared to be <strong>of</strong> significant importance to employers, particularly<br />

problem-solving-, oral communication-, general IT user- and team-working- skills;<br />
