Modernisation Lilienstrasse Lilienstrasse 16, 18 The two buildings erected in the year 1952 are not particularly conspicuous, with their 36 very small apartments. And yet, when you take a closer look, you see the finely proportioned detail of the perforated façades, the almost square windows, and the attractive door frames. By 1997, the complex was ready for modernisation. The single-room apartments with no bath or central heating facilities were transformed into modern apartment rows, comprising twelve one-room and twelve three-room apartments. As part of the general renovation, the Munich architect Stefan Holzfurtner opened up the building to the west, towards the courtyard. He put large French windows into every apartment, to ensure that they enjoyed copious amounts of sunlight. As much of the original building structure as possible was preserved on the inside, and a minimum of intrusion employed to achieve maximum space and atmosphere. Even the façade appears the same as it was before. The old casement windows have been retained and the colour is still reminiscent of the 1950s. For its careful modernisation programme, the Supreme Building Authority of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior awarded the project the highly desirable Bavarian Housing Prize, in 1997.
