The architect Michael Ziller won the
urban development ideas competition
for the Maikäfer Estate with a design
that is as consistent as it is flexible:
preserving the character of the estate,
maintaining the green areas, and at the
same time undertaking considerable
consolidation. The four-storey residential
and commercial building with shops and
58 apartments faces the road as a noise
barrier. The rear sides of the apartments
open out towards the quiet garden with
large, protected patios. This building
phase was completed in January 2009,
to replace 92 demolished residential
units, which have now undergone contemporary
reinterpretation.
The underground garage has 106
spaces for both tenants and customers
of the shops, and has been skilfully concealed
below the building. All apartments,
shops and even the garage have
barrier-free access.
