Attic space after modernisation
He even transformed dark, shadowy
courtyards into sunny play areas for
small children and places where local
residents would quite naturally choose
to meet.
Balconies were installed, in themselves
a special construction, to connect the
residential units with the courtyard. A
cursory look across the ensemble shows
how much energy the architect and
GWG München have invested in the
sustainable modernisation. The former
105 small and very small apartments
have been converted into 84 larger and
higher quality residences. An additional
21 apartments were created by converting
the attics. Today, the estate has been
revitalised by the mixture of one and
two-room apartments and occasional
family-sized apartments.
The jury was unanimous. “The owner of
the building has shown in an exemplary
manner how buildings from the 1950s
can be improved by simple means.” The
project won the “Honorary prize for
quality residential building, housing for
senior citizens and exemplary renovation“,
awarded by the State Capital of
Munich in 2005. This was followed two
years later by the “German Builder-
Owner Prize“.
