Here, the transformation is so close, you
can touch it. GWG München is replacing
the existing buildings on the eastern
side of the Garmischer Strasse, which
were originally built in the 1950s and no
longer satisfy present-day expectations
of amenities, comfort, layout and ecology,
with new buildings. As the Committee
for Urban Planning and Building
Regulations ruled in 2003, “the condition
of the current buildings and their
inadequate layouts do not justify modernisation
as an option for urban renovation.”
However, the splendid trees
and copses around the 42,000-squaremetre
site will remain. They will form a
green strip, known as the village green.
While the Mittlere Ring will be enclosed,
a modern neighbourhood will arise,
which will preserve the benefits of the
existing structure and its high proportion
of green spaces, and even add to it.
