BLACKBURN TREATMENT OPTIONS
The following seven options have been identified for upgrading the Blackburn
sewage collection area and WWTP:
4.1 OPTION 1 - DECOMMISSION EXISTING BLACKBURN WWTP AND
ROUTE ALL FLOW TO LANSDOWNE ROAD WWTP MA
FORCEMAINlGRAVITY SEWER CONNECTION
4.1.1 Outline
In this option the existing sewage lagoons would be decommissioned and all
flows transferred for treatment at the Lansdowne Road WWTP via a new
forcemain and trunk gravity sewer from the Mackus Road pumpstation. A
schematic representation of this option is presented in Figure 4.1. An VI
reduction program is to be initiated and completed to reduce the volume of
wasfewater being transferred during wet weather and snowmelt conditions.
The existing Mackus Road pumpstation would be upgraded and a new, small
pumpstation would be constructed at the Blackbum WWTP site. It is believed
that the Lansdowne Road WWTP has sufficient capacity to handIe the
projected future hydraulic and BODflSS loadings from the Blackbum sewage
collection area.
Key activities or capital works associated with this option are as follows:
Implement and complete I/I reduction program.
Decommission lagoons and rehabilitate site for other use.
Upgrade Mackus Road pumpstation to handle projected increased flows.
Construct t ~nk gravity sewer and/or forcemain to transfer all flows from
Blackbum sewerage area to Lansdowne Road WWTP.
Upgrade downtown sewage collection pipework to handle increased flows
from Blackbum sewerage area
Construct sewage pumpstation at Blackbum WWTP site and construct
connecting forcemain discharging to Mackus Road pumpstation.
