CIBERDEM Fundraising
In its effort to continue supporting the work of its research
groups, CIBERDEM has designed a strategic fundraising
plan with two clearly defined lines of action: on the one
hand, actions aimed at private individuals, and on the
other, those aimed at the business community. In 2010,
implementation of the private individual plan was begun
and work started on drafting the business community plan.
The objective of this initiative is to increase the level of
awareness of the problem of diabetes in Spain in order to
produce the active participation of key sectors in Spanish
society and thus generate funds to carry out research
projects to help to prevent, treat and cure diabetes.
In order to attain its objectives, CIBERDEM introduced its
Investiga la diabetes (research diabetes) initiative, a nonprofit-making
venture which seeks to involve all patients,
their families and society at large in the fight against
diabetes through research.
In 2010, CIBERDEM began the initiative in several of
Spain’s Autonomous Communities (Andalusia, Catalonia,
Castile–La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Madrid, Valencia,
the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and the Basque
Country) involving a total of over 3,000 people. The Investiga
la diabetes bracelet was also launched, the idea being to
make people aware of the fight against this disease and to
secure their involvement.
We should also like to take this opportunity to thank all the
patients’ associations which have collaborated with us for
their support and commitment. We should also like to thank
all CIBERDEM researchers for their contribution to helping
to popularize this initiative at events both at a national level
and within the Consortium: the Public Awareness Event and
the Annual Meeting.
3rd Public Awareness Event
The 3rd CIBERDEM Public Awareness Event «Investiga la
diabetes’10» was held at the Casa de la Ciencia (CSIC) in
Sevilla, on November 13, 2010. The programme included
exhibitions and interactive activities with the aim of
showing the general public the latest advances in diabetes
research. More than 300 people attended the event and
took part in the different activities, including the lecture
given by Dr Bernat Soria, researcher and ex-health minister,
on the research being done in diabetes. Also, researchers
and members of CIBERDEM participated in the creation
and development of scientific workshops which opened up
the world of science to all who attended. This event also
motivated people to take part and give their support to
diabetes research.
