deep pipe wells situ<strong>at</strong>ed in a valley about one-fourth <strong>of</strong> a<br />

mile from the buildings, and is first-class in quality. <strong>The</strong><br />

sewage is<br />

discharged about the same distance away and on<br />

a lower level and <strong>at</strong> some distance from the source <strong>of</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

supply.<br />

<strong>The</strong> building is well supplied with w<strong>at</strong>er fixtures <strong>of</strong> the<br />

proper design and well arranged. He<strong>at</strong>ing is done by<br />

steam, direct-indirect radi<strong>at</strong>ors being used in the rooms,<br />

with air-ducts extending through the exterior walls <strong>of</strong> the<br />

building, so th<strong>at</strong> a supply <strong>of</strong> fresh air is available, if the<br />

m<strong>at</strong>ter receives proper <strong>at</strong>tention.<br />

Ventil<strong>at</strong>ion is secured by<br />

floor and ceiling registers opening into flues th<strong>at</strong> extend<br />

through the ro<strong>of</strong>.<br />

This being the newest institution, it<br />

is only reasonable to<br />

expect th<strong>at</strong> its sanitary equipment should be an improvement<br />

upon those previously built. Dr. R. H. Lewis, Secretary<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Board, accompanied me, and a more detailed<br />

report <strong>of</strong> our visit has been sent to the Superintendent <strong>of</strong><br />

the school, to whom we are indebted for many courtesies.<br />

THE STATE NORMAL SCHOOL AT GREENSBORO.<br />

This school has been in oper<strong>at</strong>ion but a few years, and<br />

therefore the buildings are <strong>of</strong> modern construction. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

are he<strong>at</strong>ed by steam, with radi<strong>at</strong>ors <strong>of</strong> the direct-indirect<br />

type, so th<strong>at</strong> a supply <strong>of</strong> fresh air is insured. <strong>The</strong> rooms<br />

are ventil<strong>at</strong>ed by the usual style <strong>of</strong> flues, with floor and<br />

ceiling registers. <strong>The</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er supply for domestic purposes<br />

comes from the city w<strong>at</strong>er-works sj'-stem and the drinking<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er from a deep well on the grounds. <strong>The</strong> building has<br />

been arranged for sanitary fixtures, but they were omitted<br />

on account <strong>of</strong> the difficulty <strong>of</strong> sewerage disposal.<br />

At present the kitchen wastes are discharged through a<br />

drain into a w<strong>at</strong>er course several hundred feet distant. <strong>The</strong>
