ments for the meeting. Being County Superintendent <strong>of</strong> Health for<br />
Rowan county as well ass a member <strong>of</strong> the St<strong>at</strong>e Board, and possessing<br />
the respect and esteem <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>essional brethren as well as the confidence<br />
and affection <strong>of</strong> the community, he W'as in a position to make his<br />
earnest and energetic efforts tell. He enlisted the interested support <strong>of</strong><br />
his pr<strong>of</strong>essional brethren <strong>of</strong> the town and county, the ]Mayor and other<br />
<strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>of</strong> the municipality, and a goodly number <strong>of</strong> the people, and<br />
this in the face <strong>of</strong> a reunion <strong>of</strong> the veterans <strong>of</strong> the county and an exciting<br />
political convention which took away many <strong>of</strong> the leading citizens.<br />
Speaking for the Board <strong>of</strong> Health, we wish to put on record our appreci<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the cordial<br />
reception and interested <strong>at</strong>tention given us by the<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession and the people <strong>of</strong> Salisbury and Rowan county.<br />
<strong>The</strong> following programme was sent in quantities to the Superintendents<br />
<strong>of</strong> all counties within easy reach <strong>of</strong> Salisbury in advance for public<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
in the jiajiers and distribution through the mails. <strong>The</strong> <strong>at</strong>tendance<br />
from beyond the limits <strong>of</strong> the county was, however, we regret to<br />
say, small. <strong>The</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> those who did come was, therefore, the<br />
more highly appreci<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
Health Conference <strong>at</strong> Salisbury, N. C, Thursday, September V.), <strong>1894</strong>.<br />
AIMS AND objects<br />
<strong>The</strong> Conference is to be between the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> Health and health<br />
<strong>of</strong>ficers, both county and town, mayors and other municipal <strong>of</strong>ficials,<br />
and citizens generally who take sufficient interest in hygiene to <strong>at</strong>tend.<br />
It is intended to be a meeting <strong>of</strong> the members <strong>of</strong> the Board with the<br />
people. Its object is to interest the people in sanit<strong>at</strong>ion by explaining<br />
and impressing upon them the gre<strong>at</strong> importance to the individual and<br />
to the community <strong>of</strong> a strict observance <strong>of</strong> the laws <strong>of</strong> health. As "the<br />
hand th<strong>at</strong> rocks the cradle rules the world " the ladies are especially invited<br />
to <strong>at</strong>tend. Every one present will be entitled to all the privileges<br />
<strong>of</strong> the floor and it is earnestly hoped th<strong>at</strong> the discussions will be general.<br />
Papers are promised on the following subjects:<br />
<strong>The</strong> Sanitary Improvements <strong>of</strong> our Jails and County Homes.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Prevention <strong>of</strong> Tuberculosis (Consumption) as We Know It To-day.<br />
Quarantine and Disinfection in Rel<strong>at</strong>ion to Contagious Diseases.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Pollution <strong>of</strong> Drinking W<strong>at</strong>er and Its Detection.<br />
Drinking W<strong>at</strong>er in Rel<strong>at</strong>ion to Malarial Diseases.<br />
An Instructive Epidemic <strong>of</strong> Typhoid Fever.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re will probably be one or two more papers <strong>of</strong> both interest and<br />
value.<br />
Among other subjects to be discussed will be:<br />
<strong>The</strong> W<strong>at</strong>er Supply <strong>of</strong> Salisbury.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Dispo.sal <strong>of</strong> Waste and Excreta in Salisbury and Similar Towns.
