w<strong>at</strong>er now in use, the cistern, and the deep well-w<strong>at</strong>er, respectively.<br />
"3. Th<strong>at</strong> if it be not already a routine practice—as it prol>ably is—<br />
full and accur<strong>at</strong>e record <strong>of</strong> disease—malaria particularly—be kept from<br />
now on, in order to cre<strong>at</strong>e a basis <strong>of</strong> comparison with a similar record<br />
after the change in drinking w<strong>at</strong>er.<br />

dear Sir:—Yours <strong>of</strong> recent d<strong>at</strong>e, suggesting experiments by the<br />
Penitenitiary <strong>of</strong> cistern and deep well w<strong>at</strong>er, for the better sanit<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
our convict camps, is received and duly considered.<br />
"I hope soon, by the assistance <strong>of</strong> Dr. Holmes, St<strong>at</strong>e Geologist, to make<br />
some explor<strong>at</strong>ion as to the possibility <strong>of</strong> getting the deej) w<strong>at</strong>er, and<br />
then, if successful, to adopt wh<strong>at</strong>ever plan seems most practicable and<br />
to promise the best results.<br />

1 also had a personal interview with Mr. A. B. Young, the energetic<br />
President <strong>of</strong> the Board. He showed much interest in the m<strong>at</strong>ter and<br />
promised to see wh<strong>at</strong> could be done.<br />
Learning th<strong>at</strong> driven wells had been tried on the St<strong>at</strong>e farms in Halifax,<br />
I wrote, enclosing circular-letter No. 2, to Drs. George H. West and<br />
H. B. Furgerson, physicians to the farms. Only one reply has been<br />
received, I regret to say, so far, and th<strong>at</strong> not so full and detailed as it<br />
will be in the near future, as appears in the letter itself. It is quite<br />
instructive, however, as it is, and we may look forward with much<br />
interest to Dr. West's promised paper.<br />
