years th<strong>at</strong> have elapsed since our last re[)ort<br />

the cause <strong>of</strong> public hygiene iii our St<strong>at</strong>e has been markedly ,<br />

advanced. <strong>The</strong> interest in this most important subject,<br />

both on the part <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the medical pr<strong>of</strong>ession and<br />

<strong>of</strong> the people generally, shows a very decided increase.<br />

While our work has been, and continues to be, largely<br />

"missionary" in character—to carry to those ignorant <strong>of</strong>,<br />

or indifferent to, its saving power the gospel <strong>of</strong> health<br />

the Board has accomplished much positive good. We feel<br />

th<strong>at</strong> we can claim without hesit<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> the saving <strong>of</strong><br />

many valuable lives and the prevention <strong>of</strong> a large amount<br />

<strong>of</strong> sickness can be directly traced to its efforts. <strong>The</strong> provisions<br />

<strong>of</strong> the law enacted by the last General Assembly<br />

requiring physicians to report immedi<strong>at</strong>ely to the proper<br />

health <strong>of</strong>ficer cases <strong>of</strong> contagious and infectious disease and<br />

making it oblig<strong>at</strong>ory upon said health <strong>of</strong>ficer to see th<strong>at</strong><br />

such diseases "are properly quarantined and isol<strong>at</strong>ed within<br />

twenty-four hours after the case is brought to his knowledge,<br />

and th<strong>at</strong> after the de<strong>at</strong>h or recovery or removal <strong>of</strong> a<br />

person sick <strong>of</strong> either <strong>of</strong> the diseases mentioned the rooms<br />

occupied and the articles used by the p<strong>at</strong>ient are thoroughly<br />

disinfected in the manner set forth in the printed instructions,<br />

both as to quarantine and disinfection, which shall<br />

be furnished him by the Secretar}^ <strong>of</strong> the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong>
