STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT<br />

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which is consistent with the Core Values<br />

(Excellence, Civility, Integrity, Diversity, and Accountability), purpose, goals, and objectives of <strong>Bowie</strong><br />

<strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>. In particular, all students have the privilege to learn, subject only to their own initiative<br />

and ability, uninhibited by the behavior of others. The <strong>University</strong> reserves the right to deny admission to<br />

any applicant, to discontinue the enrollment of any student, or to withhold the degree of any student if,<br />

in the opinion of <strong>University</strong> authorities, a student’s behavior is in continuous or serious violation of the<br />

Student Code of Conduct established by the faculty, students, and administration and published in the<br />

Student Handbook. Academic honesty, as defined in the Student Handbook, is required of all students.<br />

The <strong>Bowie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Man and Woman<br />

Standards and Expectations<br />

<strong>University</strong> administrators, faculty, and staff are individually and collectively committed to assisting each<br />

student in his/her personal development and providing the quality education necessary to achieve<br />

his/her goals. The <strong>University</strong> also takes seriously its obligation to nurture and to assist each student in<br />

developing his/her personal character. However, it is incumbent upon each student to assume personal<br />

responsibility for his/her conduct and behavior. <strong>Bowie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> presumes, therefore, that the<br />

student:<br />

Seeks to Develop Self Academically, Physically, and Spiritually<br />

Possesses an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and is responsive to new ideas and different<br />

dimensions of thought. The student does not abuse or violate his/her physical and spiritual well‐being<br />

and has a strong sense of positive self‐esteem.<br />

Values Life<br />

Accepts, respects, and celebrates racial, gender, and cultural diversity as a natural part of our social<br />

fabric. He/she behaves and interacts with others with dignity and respect, refusing to violate or abuse<br />

the rights of others, and is willing to assist those in need or in distress.<br />

Has Integrity<br />

Has a value system and code of ethics that foster positive personal growth and development. The<br />

student is true to his/her personal convictions and is unwilling to compromise personal values and<br />

standards of behavior.<br />

Is Dependable<br />

Follows through on self‐assigned tasks as well as those to which he/she has been assigned and is timely<br />

in carrying out those assignments.<br />

Sets High Personal Standards<br />

Is goal and solution‐oriented, refuses to accept mediocrity, and continues to seek excellence in<br />

whatever he/she undertakes.<br />

Has Effective Communication Skills<br />

Strives to develop and master effective verbal and writing skills. He/she clearly understands that poor<br />

communication skills can have a deleterious impact on his/her professional growth and development.<br />

Is Aware of His/Her History<br />

Recognizes the richness of his/her legacy and understands the need to learn from and apply the lessons<br />

of one’s cultural, racial, and personal history. He/she is aware of past and present contributions his/her<br />

ancestors have made to the nation and the global community as well.<br />

Knows and Abides By the Rules of Social Decorum<br />

Clearly understands that verbal abuse, rowdiness, fighting, impoliteness, and other forms of social<br />

misconduct are unwarranted and unacceptable social behavior.<br />
