Segment 7: YMCA to Civitan Park
The Piedmont Greenway will leave the railroad corridor and continue east toward Fourth-of-July Park,
Kernersville Elementary School and Civitan Park, following West Mountain Street on the northern side. A
major access point to the YMCA spur trail will occur at Asbury Street and Bodenhamer and at Nelson Street
for the Kerners Mill Creek spur trail. This segment will be a 10-foot-wide asphalt and/or gravel trail. Greenway
kiosks and markers will be placed along the trail for mileage as well as natural and historical information.
Including the two spur trails, there are two major destinations in this segment of the Greenway. Fourthof-July
Park will offer a minor trailhead and make available use of its existing parking and bathroom facilities.
Kernersville Elementary School is the second destination, allowing students to use the trail system.
There are presently two alternatives to reaching Civitan Park in this segment. The first involves using
Fourth of July Park as an extension of the primary trail, then Kernersville Elementary School’s northern
boundary along the railroad ROW until reaching Nelson Street
and finally Civitan Park. This first alternative is the most desirable
because it offers a true off-road trail of approximately 0.6
miles.
The second alternative would be to use the existing
sidewalk that fronts Fourth of July Park and Kernersville Elementary
School along West Mountain Street, then continuing
north along the sidewalk at Nelson School Road to Civitan
Park. The major advantage to this alternative is that the sidewalks
are already in place for this 0.7 mile segment. However,
the trail would be restricted to a sidewalk width because
of the lack of ROW along the road.
SEGMENT 7
Civitan Park can be reached by either trail alternative via
Nelson School Road and the existing railroad crossing found
here. Proper signage and intersection upgrades will be added
to the existing railroad crossing for pedestrian and bicycle trail
users.
