DESCRIPTION
A Classification notation addressing redundancy arrangements and indicating that a vessel is fitted
with multiple propulsion machines but only one propulsor and steering system, and that the
arrangements are in accordance with the applicable requirements of Section 4-3-6 of the ABS Rules
for Building and Classing Steel Vessels. The additional mark + will be added to the R1 notation to
denote that the vessel’s propulsion capability is such that, upon a single failure, propulsive power can
be maintained or immediately restored to the extent necessary to withstand adverse weather
conditions without drifting in accordance with 4-3-6/7.1 of the Rules. The lack of the mark +
indicates that the vessel is not intended to withstand the adverse weather conditions in 4-3-6/7.1, but
can maintain course and maneuverability at a reduced speed under normal expected weather
conditions in accordance with 4-3-6/7.3 of the Rules.
