HCS<br />

DESCRIPTION<br />

Hatch Cover Strength (HCS) – The notation HCS placed after <strong>the</strong> appropriate classification notation<br />

for Bulk Carriers or Combination Carriers signifies that <strong>the</strong> cargo hold hatch covers located forward<br />

<strong>of</strong> 0.25L from <strong>the</strong> forward perpendicular are designed in accordance with <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong><br />

5C-3-6/15 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>ABS</strong> Rules for Building and <strong>Class</strong>ing Steel Vessels, 2003. This notation is valid for<br />

existing vessels, which have HCS notation or any new vessel under construction, for which <strong>the</strong><br />

building contract between Owner and builder was signed before 1 January 2004.<br />
