inactions during this critical time in <strong>Jewish</strong> history. Chapter 14 concludes the work and<br />

continues the discussion <strong>of</strong> the effect <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Conference</strong> on German as well as Polish<br />

policies. It also <strong>of</strong>fers a link to future refugee problems.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Evian</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> marked the first global attempt to resolve an international<br />

refugee crisis through diplomacy. Its success hinged on the interplay between varied<br />

economic, social, political, racial and ideological factors that came into conflict and<br />

eventually resulted in the “Perfect Storm.” <strong>The</strong> destiny <strong>of</strong> Continental Jews and <strong>of</strong> the<br />

world itself was ultimately affected by the decisions (or lack there<strong>of</strong>) <strong>of</strong> the meeting <strong>of</strong><br />

the Intergovernmental Committee for Political Refugees held in the confines <strong>of</strong> a<br />

luxurious hotel on the shores <strong>of</strong> a scenic and serene lake.<br />
