painted Jude. Many cafés posted notices that “<strong>Jewish</strong> customers [were] not desired.” 33<br />

<strong>Jewish</strong> businesses were to be boycotted by Aryan customers. 34<br />

<strong>The</strong> ultimate goal was the<br />

Aryanization <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jewish</strong> holdings at the lowest financial costs. <strong>The</strong> Reich Governor or<br />

Statthalter, Dr. Seyss-Inquart, decreed that a “trustee manager” would be appointed to<br />

take over the operation <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Jewish</strong> business concern if the owner disappeared, was<br />

incarcerated, unable to conduct business or posed a threat to smuggle assets out <strong>of</strong><br />

Austria. 35 Jews were conscripted by Nazi brownshirts (S.A. or Sturmabteilung) for<br />

forced labor in “cleaning brigades” so that Jews would “learn what real manual labor<br />

means.” 36<br />

Field Marshal Herman Wilhelm Goering warned that Jews no longer had a place<br />

in Austrian society and must emigrate. He warned that Vienna would “be<strong>com</strong>e German<br />

again. <strong>The</strong> Jew must know we do not care to live with him. He must go.” 37 He also<br />

announced that the Government would begin the process <strong>of</strong> “legally and quietly”<br />
