OUTCOMES<br />
Exercise Science<br />
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:<br />
• Effectively communicate issues which relate to health, fitness,<br />
and sports<br />
• Demonstrate an ability to design and implement fitness and<br />
rehabilitative programs for the general and athletic population<br />
• Critically analyze concepts of the basic sciences, nutrition, and<br />
psychology in regards to the relationship to human movement<br />
• Understand the importance of physical activity on health and<br />
wellness and promote these ideas to the general public<br />
• Advocate health and safety techniques in the prevention of<br />
injuries in the sport and fitness setting<br />
• Demonstrate professional behaviors through understanding of<br />
administrative issues and practical experiences in the field of<br />
exercise science.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR EXERCISE SCIENCE<br />
MAJOR<br />
Exercise Science (BS)<br />
There are four tracks offered within the Exercise Science Major.<br />
The required courses for each track are listed below:<br />
• Pre-Physical Therapy: BIOL 209-210, 233, 305, 335;<br />
MATH 207-208 or 301- 302; CHE 103-104; EXS 201, 301,<br />
302, 303, 304, 305, 308, 310, 403; FNU 208, 317; PSY 101,<br />
208, 324, 250 or 357; PHY 203-204; plus the completion of<br />
two physical education activity units. EXS 201 will meet the<br />
liberal arts physical education core requirement (EXS 101) for<br />
graduation.<br />
• Sport Management: ACC 201, ECO 203; BUS 311, 320,<br />
315 or 338, 366 and MKT 309; BIOL 202; CHE 100; MATH<br />
101-102 or 203-204; PSY 250 or 357; EXS 201, 202, 301,<br />
302, 306, 307, 310, 403; FNU 208, 317; plus the completion<br />
of two physical education activity units. EXS 201 will meet<br />
the liberal arts physical education core requirement (EXS101)<br />
for graduation.<br />
• Physical Therapy DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy)<br />
Program with Thomas Jefferson <strong>University</strong> (3 Years + 3<br />
Years): BIOL 209-210, 233,335; CHE 103-104; MATH 207-<br />
208 or 301-302; EXS 201, 301, 302, 303, 404; PHY 203-204;<br />
PSY 208, 320, 324; FNU 208, 317; plus the completion of two<br />
physical education activity units. EXS 201 will meet the<br />
liberal arts physical education core requirement (EXS101) for<br />
graduation. At the conclusion of the third year of study at<br />
<strong>Immaculata</strong>, the student will transfer to Thomas Jefferson<br />
<strong>University</strong> School of Health Sciences (TJU) for an additional<br />
three years of study. After successfully completing the first<br />
year of study at TJU, the student will be awarded a B.S. from<br />
<strong>Immaculata</strong> in Exercise Science.<br />

• Occupational Therapy MS (Masters of Science) Program<br />
with Thomas Jefferson <strong>University</strong> ( 3 Years + 2.5 Years):<br />
BIOL 209-210; MATH 203-204 or 207-208; SOC 202, 328;<br />
PSY 208, 320, 324; FNU 208, 317; EXS 201, 301, 302, 303,<br />
404; plus the completion of two physical education activity<br />
units. EXS 201 will meet the liberal arts physical education<br />
core requirement (EXS101) for graduation. At the conclusion<br />
of the third year of study at <strong>Immaculata</strong>, the student will<br />
transfer to Thomas Jefferson <strong>University</strong> School of Health<br />
Sciences (TJU) for an additional two and one half years of<br />
study. After successfully completing the first year of study at<br />
TJU, the student will be awarded a B.S. from <strong>Immaculata</strong> in<br />
Exercise Science.<br />

REQUIREMENTS FOR EXERCISE SCIENCE<br />
MINORS<br />
• Pre-physical therapy track: Prerequisites: Biology major or<br />
special permission of the department; BIOL 209-210 (or BIOL<br />
232 and BIOL 304), CHE 103-104, PHY 203-204, BIOL 335.<br />
Requirements: EXS 301, 302, 303, 304, 305 and 310.<br />
• Sport Management track: Prerequisite: Business<br />
Administration Major or permission of department; BUS<br />
320/324, BUS 338, EXS 301, EXS 306, EXS 307 or 202 and 310.<br />
EXERCISE SCIENCE<br />
EXS 101 Personal Fitness and Wellness (2)<br />
This course addresses the students’ lifestyles, attitudes, and<br />
behaviors as they relate to personal fitness and wellness. A<br />
combination of lecture and activity sessions empowers the students<br />
to develop personal strategies that will enable them to achieve<br />
positive lifestyle practices.<br />
EXS 201 Introduction to Exercise Science and Fitness (3)<br />
An introductory course designed to expose the student to the<br />
concepts, theories, principles, and concerns associated with exercise<br />
science and fitness. (Required for all exercise science majors.)<br />
EXS 202 Current Trends in Sport & Fitness (3)<br />
With the continuance of research in the exercise science area,<br />
this course examines the current trends and findings in sport and<br />
fitness as it relates particularly to injury and illness. The course also<br />
examines the promotion of health education through individual and<br />
community education.<br />
EXS 230 African Dance - A Cultural and Historical<br />
Perspective (3)<br />
West African secular and sacred dance forms will be examined,<br />
with attention given to the religious, cultural, and social histories in<br />
which these dances developed and to the ways in which dance<br />
expresses the cultural norms and aspirations of a people. Studies<br />
will also include the critical impact that African dance has made on<br />
dance in the United States, from the Charleston to Elvis to Alvin<br />
Ailey American Dance Theater. (This course fulfills the crosscultural<br />
requirement.)<br />
EXS 301 Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries (3)<br />
This course is the study of prevention and treatment of athletic<br />
injuries and the first aid technique. Emphasis is on the integration<br />
of the classroom study to the practical application of treating<br />
injuries in their initial phases.<br />
