Two degrees are offered: 1) an Associate of Science in Allied<br />
Health Sciences with a concentration in Nursing (A.S.) in<br />
conjunction with an accredited diploma nursing school and 2) the<br />
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.). The B.S.N. is an<br />
accelerated degree completion program.<br />
OUTCOMES<br />
The B.S.N. program prepares student to:<br />
• demonstrate a holistic perspective in all areas of professional<br />
practice<br />
• respect the dignity of self and others in professional practice<br />
by seeking truth, acting justly and fostering peace<br />
• exhibit professional values based on ethical, legal and moral<br />
standards for professional nursing practice<br />
• value the importance of life-long learning<br />
• act as a change agent to promote the health and welfare of<br />
all people<br />
• critically analyze theories and research results and incorporate<br />
them into the practice of professional nursing<br />
• recognize the impact of cultural forces, particularly the social,<br />
economic, and political aspects, on the health of individuals,<br />
families, neighborhoods and the global community<br />
• utilize leadership skills to collaborate with practitioners from<br />
all disciplines<br />
• communicate effectively orally, through the written word, and<br />
technologically<br />
• apply teaching/learning principles in promoting health.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION<br />
• Allied Health Sciences with a Concentration in Nursing<br />
(AS): High school diploma; current enrollment in a NLNAC<br />
accredited hospital-based nursing program.<br />
• B.S.N. (an accelerated degree completion program): R.N.<br />
licensure; graduation from a NLNAC accredited nursing<br />
program with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA, physical examination,<br />
negative PPD or chest X-ray, and current CPR certification.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSOCIATE OF<br />
SCIENCE IN ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES<br />
WITH A CONCENTRATION IN NURSING<br />
• Liberal arts core: 27-28 credits; ENG 106,107; natural<br />
science/mathematics/computer science (6-7); humanities (3);<br />
social science (6); theology (6).<br />
• Major requirements: BIOL 208, 209, 210; CHEM 100;<br />
FNU 208; nursing concentration (30 credits) from a NLNAC<br />
accredited diploma school of nursing.<br />
NURSING PROGRAM IN COOPERATION WITH<br />
BRANDYWINE HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF<br />
NURSING<br />
In an effort to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue a<br />
career in professional nursing, <strong>Immaculata</strong> entered into a<br />
cooperative agreement with Brandywine School of Nursing. In this<br />
unique program, study takes place concurrently at <strong>Immaculata</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> and Brandywine School of Nursing. Graduates of this<br />
program, who have completed degree requirements as specified<br />
above for the Associate of Science in Allied Health Sciences with a<br />
Concentration in Nursing, receive an Associate of Science for Allied<br />
Health Sciences with a Concentration in Nursing from <strong>Immaculata</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> and a diploma in nursing from Brandywine School of<br />
Nursing. They are eligible to take the examination required for<br />
licensure, the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX-RN).<br />
By returning to <strong>Immaculata</strong> following the successful passage of<br />
the licensure exam, students may complete the Bachelor of Science<br />
in Nursing (B.S.N.) through the ACCEL ® program.<br />
ACCEL ® – ACCELERATED RN TO BSN<br />
PROGRAM<br />
The Department of Nursing at <strong>Immaculata</strong> <strong>University</strong> developed<br />
an Accelerated Continuing and Experiential Learning (ACCEL ® )<br />
Program to meet the needs of registered nurses interested in earning<br />
a baccalaureate degree. By attending one morning or one evening<br />
per week, this program enables the working nurse to complete<br />
degree requirements in about two years.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR BSN DEGREE<br />
COMPLETION<br />
• Admission/Lower Division Requirements: English<br />
Composition (6 cr), Introduction to Sociology (3 cr);<br />
Introduction to Psychology (3 cr); Lifespan Developmental<br />
Psychology (3 cr); Microbiology (3-4 cr); Anatomy and<br />
Physiology (6-8 cr); Chemistry 100 (3-4 cr); Nutrition (3 cr);<br />
Nursing concentration (30 credits).<br />
• ACCEL ® Program: NUR 301, 302, 336, 403, 416, 418, 423,<br />
432, 440 450, (35 credits of upper division nursing courses).<br />
Another 15 credits are distributed as follows: PHI 209, ENG<br />
241, ORG 311, THE 408, POL 352.<br />
• Requirements beyond ACCEL ® Program: Philosophy (3 cr);<br />
Theology (3 cr); English literature (3 cr); World Civilization (3<br />
cr); Foreign Language or Spanish for Medical Personnel (3<br />
cr); electives as needed to complete 126 total credits.<br />
SCHOOL NURSE CERTIFICATION<br />
This certification has been approved by the Pennsylvania<br />
Department of Education. Students who have completed the<br />
approved program and have been recommended by <strong>Immaculata</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> are eligible for a preliminary Pennsylvania Certificate to<br />
work in school settings as a school nurse. Students seeking<br />
certification should contact the Coordinator of the School Nurse<br />
Certification Program.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION<br />
• Current R.N. Licensure, B.S.N. or current enrollment in the<br />
<strong>Immaculata</strong> <strong>University</strong> BSN program<br />
• Liberal arts requirements: Prior education must have<br />
included Mathematics (6 cr.); English Composition (3 cr.);<br />
English Literature (3 cr.).<br />
• Major requirements: Education 301, 381; Nursing 420 (one<br />
education course must be taken before Nursing 420).<br />
Education courses may also be taken at the graduate level.<br />
