HIST 210 The Science Fiction 1950s (3)<br />
Many interesting films were produced in the Cold War 1950s that<br />
reflected pervasive American fears of communist infiltration and<br />
invasion. This course will explore major and minor films of that<br />
period, and examine the varied ways in which Hollywood portrayed<br />
the “enemy” and the scientific wonders of the emerging Space Age.<br />

This course examines the problems, techniques, and<br />
achievements of efforts to record or reconstruct events on film in a<br />
historically accurate way.<br />

An exploration of the roots of contemporary issues in society in<br />
the United States: the increased power of the executive in<br />
government, the rise of minority groups, the changing family, the<br />
place of communications media in the formation of public opinion,<br />
and changes in the economy.<br />

Investigation of the European world from the voyages of<br />
discovery to the eve of the French and Industrial Revolutions.<br />
Topics addressed include the political, economic, and intellectual<br />
foundations of the rapid transformation in the modern era and the<br />
growth of European contacts with the non-western world.<br />
HIST 234 Revolutionary Europe (3)<br />
European history from the late 18th century to the outbreak of<br />
the First World War. Examines the political, economic, and social<br />
revolutions of the century of European ascendancy.<br />
HIST 235 Europe in the Twentieth Century (3)<br />
The European experience from the outbreak of the First World<br />
War through the Great Depression and the crisis of democracy, the<br />
Second World War and reconstruction, to the collapse of<br />
communism and the movement toward European unity.<br />
HIST 236 The History of the Papacy (3)<br />
This course will survey the history of the papacy from the time<br />
of the French Revolution to the present, with particular emphasis on<br />
the relationship between the theological development and papal<br />
policy and diplomacy. Students of both theology and history will<br />
discover a deeper understanding of the changing role of the Roman<br />

HIST 239 Film History (3)<br />
A survey of the history of film from silent film to the present.<br />
The course introduces students to genres, directors, and national<br />
cinemas while touching upon changing technologies, modes of<br />
production, and forms of distribution.<br />
HIST 300 HON: The Holocaust (3)<br />
This course examines the 20th Century global phenomenon of<br />
genocide. It focuses on the Nazi German attempt to annihilate the<br />
Jewish population of Europe during the Second Word War. The<br />
concerns of the course are 1) the destructive potential in modern<br />
systems of social order and 2) human behavior under extreme<br />
conditions. (See PSY 300)<br />
HIST 303 History of American Business (3)<br />
The history of American business from colonial times to the<br />
present. The course offers a variety of case studies from wellknown<br />
companies and industries and a thematic emphasis on<br />
