POL 211 Violence (3)<br />
Examines the origins, nature, and impact of violence in<br />
American society from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.<br />
POL 213 Legal Research and Writing (3)<br />
Introduction to theoretical and practical applications of the law;<br />
fact finding methods and legal problem-solving skills. Students<br />
analyze cases, organize research, and write effectively.<br />
POL 216 Reels of Change (3)<br />
This course examines the contemporary issue of globalization as<br />
it is portrayed in some of the best movies ever made. Cultural<br />
conflict, gender roles, economic change, race, love, and murder all<br />
receive attention as key themes of the modern age. The<br />
accompanying sound-track for the course may be available on CD at<br />
the end of the term. (Meets cross-cultural studies requirement.)<br />
POL 219 Comparative Urban Politics (3)<br />
The issues facing cities in the developing world are having a<br />
significant impact upon a variety of public policy issues ranging<br />
from questions of globalization to vast economic disparities to<br />
environmental problems. By 2050 most of the world’s mega-cities<br />
will be in what we now think of as the developing world.<br />
POL 223 Urban America and the Roman Catholic Church (3)<br />
Explores the role that the Roman Catholic Church played in<br />
influencing governmental policy in relation to urban affairs at the<br />
local, state and federal levels, and how these events, in turn, caused<br />
the church itself to change. Particular attention will be paid to the<br />
development of Catholic social doctrine- specifically its<br />
commentary on human work, economic life and the political<br />
community and individuals who played significant roles in<br />
developing church doctrine and responding to the problems of urban<br />
America such as Msgr. Geno Baroni and Msgr. George Higgins.<br />

POL 228 Philadelphia Politics (3)<br />
An examination of the political and social development of the<br />
City of Philadelphia with particular emphasis will be placed on<br />
recent political leaders beginning with the reform mayors, Clark and<br />
Dilworth, continuing through Tate, Rizzo, Green, Goode, Rendell<br />
and Street.<br />
POL 229 Campaigns and Elections (3)<br />
American campaigns and elections from the nomination process<br />
through the general elections. Pays particular attention to campaign<br />
finance, research, polling, advertising, and media.<br />
POL 230 The Irish-American Political Experience (3)<br />
Examines the evolution of the Irish-American community in the<br />
United States in light of the nation’s political development with an<br />
emphasis upon the period from the Civil War forward. Special<br />
attention will be paid to the role of the urban political machine,<br />
portrayals of Irish ethnicity and their political effects throughout<br />
U.S. history, and the role of Irish-Americans in lobbying for change<br />
in Northern Ireland.<br />
POL 233 American Public Policy (3)<br />
Combines theory, case studies, and historical analysis to see how<br />
particular issues are included on the government agenda, how policy<br />
then is shaped, and what impact policies actually have. Issues<br />
studied will be drawn from the broad categories of health care,<br />
economic policy, science and environmental regulation, and social<br />
problems - poverty and welfare racial divisions, crime, generations.<br />
POL 311 Parties and Interest Groups (3)<br />
Explores the roles that parties, interest groups and social<br />
movements play in effecting party organization and electoral<br />
strategies and outcomes. Special attention is paid to the historical<br />
development of the two major political parties. Case studies may be<br />
used to evidence the developmental differences between interest<br />
groups and social movements.<br />
POL 312 Cyber War and Cyber Peace (3)<br />
Examines the role of computers, the Internet, and<br />
telecommunications in and as the subject of international affairs.<br />
POL 317 The Politics of Jurisprudence (3)<br />
An examination of the appointment process to the federal court<br />
system, the role of a federal judge, and the intellectual challenges<br />
Supreme Court Justices face in their development of a method of<br />
constitutional meaning. Original writings from Supreme Court<br />
Justices will be used to explore these issues.<br />
POL 318 American Political Thought (3)<br />
An examination of the development of political thought in the<br />
United States centered around themes such a liberty, justice,<br />
manifest destiny, and the melting pot. Special attention will be paid<br />
to such thinkers as Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, Hamilton,<br />
Tocqueville, Calhoun, Lincoln, James, Emerson, Thoreau through<br />
tot modern thinkers such as Dewey, King and Berry.<br />
POL 319 The United States Congress (3)<br />
The role of Congress in the legislative process; its internal<br />
operations and external political relations with the other branches of<br />
government. Special attention will be paid to the effect that changes<br />
in the internal operations of Congress have had upon the legislative<br />
process.<br />
POL 320 Environmental History (3)<br />
The course examines the relationship between humans and their<br />
environment, and the political, social and economic consequences<br />
of that relationship. Being interdisciplinary in its approach the<br />
course draws upon the disciplines of history, the social sciences, the<br />
hard sciences and even literature at times to develop an<br />
understanding of the role of the environment in the development of<br />
American history<br />
POL 335 The Modern Far East (3)<br />
Topics in the history of the Far East to illustrate the growing<br />
significance of the area and of its relations with the Pacific Rim.<br />

POL 336 International Laws and Rights (3)<br />
Theory of fundamental freedoms from its philosophy to its legal<br />
formulation in the American and French Revolutions; the<br />
emergence of the individual as a subject of rights and duties and<br />
international concern. Assessment of the United Nations in the area<br />
of human rights. (Prerequisite: POL 206)<br />
POL 337 Irish Politics (3)<br />
Examination of the development of the Irish constitution,<br />
political institutions and political parties since the emergence of the<br />
Irish Free State in the early twentieth century. Special attention will<br />
be paid to the Oireachtas (parliament) and the role of the Taoiseach<br />
(prime minister), the development of party and electoral systems,<br />
and the changing role of Ireland in relation to Northern Ireland, the<br />
European Union and the larger world.<br />
