OUTCOMES<br />
The English/Communication Department offers courses in the<br />
liberal arts core through which students:<br />
• develop coherent and forceful essays and engage in a recursive<br />
writing process<br />
• demonstrate the ability to consider texts critically: to read,<br />
comprehend, summarize analyze, evaluate, and extrapolate<br />
from a variety of source materials<br />
• define a topic of inquiry for a specific audience and<br />
disciplinary area<br />
• access and evaluate print and non-print information effectively<br />
• handle acquired information ethically and legally<br />
• analyze works of literature with reference to literary types,<br />
elements, and devices<br />
• respond to literary works with clearly written essays that<br />
demonstrate creative and independent thought.<br />
In the upper-level English courses offered by the<br />
English/Communication department, students:<br />
• develop further proficiency in written and spoken English<br />
• learn the history of the English language and its relationship to<br />
other languages<br />
• read, analyze, interpret, and write about major works of British<br />
and American literature with reference to their historical and<br />
cultural contexts<br />
• analyze literature according to relevant historical and<br />
contemporary literary movements<br />
• become familiar with the classics of ancient and medieval<br />
literature in translation<br />
• prepare for careers and further educational opportunities by<br />
learning effective oral, written, and technical communication<br />
skills.<br />
In the Communication courses offered by the<br />
English/Communication department, students:<br />
• acquire a thorough knowledge of communication principles<br />
and practice, with a solid grounding in the liberal arts<br />
• develop proficient written, oral, and technological skills<br />
appropriate to relevant careers in the fields of public relations,<br />
professional and technical writing, and communication in the<br />
business world<br />
• achieve a balance of theory and practice that can be applied to<br />
various communication environments<br />
• evaluate the role of media in society, including the Internet and<br />
film<br />
• participate in internships as concrete preparation for future<br />
careers<br />
• prepare for positions in the field of professional<br />
communication or for further study in applied communication.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR MAJOR IN ENGLISH<br />
• English (BA): ENG 260, 299, 400, and six credits from ENG<br />
261- 275; fifteen additional credits from 300-level English<br />
courses.<br />
• English (BA) with Secondary Education: Requirements as<br />
listed above. Students seeking certification in secondary<br />
education must take COM 226 or 227, COM 250, and ENG<br />
337 or 338 to fulfill state requirements. A student who can<br />
demonstrate competency in any of these areas may apply to<br />
waive the requirement. All students seeking PDE certification<br />
in education after January 2013 will be required to complete 9<br />
credits in special education and 3 credits in ESL.<br />
• Students (CUS and CLL) concentrating in English, who begin<br />
study on or prior to September 2009 and who are eligible for<br />
PDE certification prior to January 1, 2013, may also obtain<br />
certification in Early Childhood, Elementary, or<br />
Elementary/Special Education.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR MAJOR IN COMMUNICATION<br />
Students choose one of three tracks within the communication<br />
major: Organizational Communication, Writing for the Professions,<br />
and Communication: Public Relations Emphasis.<br />
The following courses are required of all candidates: ENG 299;<br />
COM 305 and 406; two upper level literature courses; CIS 202 or 214.<br />
Organizational Communication (BA): COM 200, 250, 350; BUS<br />
360 or 336; ACC 201. Nine credits from COM 330, 401-402; BUS<br />
301, 309, 315, 327; CIS 202 or 214; FIN 362. This program can<br />
easily be combined with minors, such as Entrepreneurship,<br />
Business, or Marketing.<br />
Writing for the Professions (BA): COM 200, 330, 307, 308, 401-<br />
402. Six credits from COM 226, 227, 306, 337, 350; CIS 202 or<br />
214. Students are strongly urged to complete a minor in another<br />
appropriate field while completing this major, depending upon their<br />
career goals.<br />
Communication: Public Relations Emphasis (BA): COM 206,<br />
239, 308, 337, 350. Six credits from COM 200, 226, 227, 250, 307,<br />
403; CCS 340; CIS 202 or 214.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORS<br />
• Communication: Eighteen credits from the<br />
English/communication offerings to include ENG 299; COM<br />
200, 305, and 403.<br />
• American and British Literature: Eighteen credits. Six<br />
credits from ENG 261-275; twelve credits from 300-level<br />
English courses. (Designed for non-English majors.)<br />
• Irish Studies: Eighteen credits. Required: IRL 101; ENG<br />
349; HIS 218. Nine additional credits from: IRL 102; ENG<br />
275; ENG 368; POL 337; BUS 301. Special topics (1 credit)<br />
in History (200) and English (275) vary each semester.<br />
• Public Relations: Eighteen credits. COM 200 or 206; COM<br />
226, 239, 403; two courses chosen from COM 250, 307, 337;<br />
CIS 202 or 214; CCS 340; BUS 309.<br />
• Film Studies: Eighteen credits. COM 225, HIST 239; four<br />
courses chosen from COM 258/PSY 338; ENG 314; HIST<br />
209, 210, 211, 217; POL 216.<br />
Credits to satisfy major concentration requirements must be<br />
earned at <strong>Immaculata</strong>, unless special permission to transfer credit<br />
is granted.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSOCIATE OF ARTS<br />
• English (AA): Eighteen credits to include: 100-level<br />
literature; ENG 299; six credits from ENG 261-275; and six<br />
credits from 300-level English electives.<br />
