MUSC 314 Music in the Elementary School (2)<br />

Principles, practices, and materials of classroom music<br />

education in levels kindergarten through six. Introduction to the<br />

Kodály, Orff, Dalcroze, and Gordon methods. Emphasis on voice<br />

as the primary instrument.<br />

MUSC 315 Music in the Secondary School (2)<br />

Principles, practices, and materials of music education at the<br />

secondary level. Emphasis on music learning theory and<br />

curriculum development.<br />

MUSC 317 Basic Conducting (2)<br />

An introduction to fundamental techniques for conducting<br />

instrumental and choral ensembles.<br />

MUSC 321 Advanced Conducting (2)<br />

This course will be an advanced application of basic techniques<br />

for conducting choral and instrumental music. Topics will include<br />

score study, rehearsal planning, rehearsal techniques, examples of<br />

repertoire, and interpretation of various musical styles.<br />

(Prerequisite MUSC 317)<br />

MUSC 332 Senior Recital (0-2)<br />

Recital in the major performance area during the senior year.<br />

With permission of applied instructor, a full recital of 60 minutes<br />

can be taken for 2 credits. A recital of 30 minutes or a joint recital<br />

of 30 minutes each can be taken for 0 or 1 credit.<br />

MUSC 341 Music History I: Bach and Before (3)<br />

Survey of western music including Medieval, Renaissance, and<br />

Baroque periods. Representative works will be studied, analyzed,<br />

and performed.<br />

MUSC 342 Music History II: Classic and Romantic Eras (3)<br />

Survey of Western music from Haydn and Mozart through Liszt<br />

and Wagner. Representative works will be studied, analyzed, and<br />

performed.<br />

MUSC 344 Seminar in Music (2)<br />

In-depth study of research for application to music therapy,<br />

music education, or other related fields. Emphasis on linkage of<br />

musicological styles through the creative process. (Prerequisite:<br />

MUSC 341, 342, and 343 and with permission of the instructor)<br />

MUSC 391 Music for Exceptional Learners (3)<br />

Techniques, methods, and materials used in teaching music to<br />

exceptional learners with a wide range of individual needs,<br />

especially as encountered the inclusive classroom setting. This<br />

course develops skill and knowledge relevant to both music<br />

education and music therapy. Can be taken by music education<br />

majors as a substitute for EDU 381.<br />

MUSC 401 Independent Music Studies (1-6)<br />

Individual reading, research, and presentation of a topic or<br />

development of a special project with the permission of and under<br />

the direction of a member of the department.<br />

MUSC 403 Applied Music Major I-VIII (1 credit per course)<br />

Private instruction for forty-five to sixty minutes weekly; a<br />

requirement for majors in the primary performance area. Recital<br />

performance required. Lesson times arranged with Coordinator of<br />

Applied Music. Course may be repeated.<br />

MUSC 404 Semester Performance (1 credit per semester)<br />

This course will allow the Music Performance major to have<br />

additional opportunities to be coached in performance and to<br />

perform in public. The course is required for all Music<br />

Performance majors for a total of 8 credits and will help prepare the<br />

student for their culminating and required performance experience:<br />

Senior Recital. This course must be repeated for 8 semesters.<br />

MUSC 441 Music History III: Twentieth Century Styles (3)<br />

Study of representative musical works by notable 20th-century<br />

composers. Examination and discussion of various musical styles<br />

including electronic music, jazz, and non-Western music.<br />

MUSC 442 Research Seminar in Music (3)<br />

In-depth study of research for application to music therapy,<br />

music education, or other related fields. Emphasis on linkage of<br />

musicological styles through the creative process. (Prerequisite:<br />

MUSC 341, 342, and 343 and with permission of the instructor)<br />

MUSIC THERAPY<br />

MTR 100 Orientation to Music Therapy (1)<br />

An overview of the music therapy field. Areas addressed include<br />

educational and training requirements in music therapy; historical<br />

underpinnings of the music therapy field; and an introduction to<br />

principal client populations served through music therapy. Includes<br />

the opportunity to observe music therapy in clinical settings.<br />

MTR 200 Music Therapy Foundations (3)<br />

A comprehensive survey of the music therapy discipline and<br />

profession. Areas addressed include defining music therapy,<br />

philosophical underpinnings of the music therapy field,<br />

psychological bases of music as therapy (including psychoacoustics,<br />

phenomenological dimensions of music experience, and<br />

developmental foundations of music experience); major theories,<br />

models, and methods of music therapy; the music therapy process<br />

(including assessment, planning, implementation, and therapeutic<br />

dynamics); bases of ethical thought and practice as a music therapist;<br />

multicultural considerations; professional issues in music therapy;<br />

an introduction to music therapy research; and an introduction to<br />

music-centered self-inquiry. (Prerequisite: MTR 100)<br />

MTR 201 Music Therapy Principles I (3)<br />

An in-depth examination of didactic practices in music therapy,<br />

in which music experiences and therapeutic relationships promote<br />

the acquisition, restoration, or maintenance of knowledge and skills<br />

integral to well being. The theoretical, clinical, and research<br />

literature pertaining to these practices are reviewed, with<br />

consideration given to multiple therapeutic orientations. Special<br />

attention is given to the role of music experiences in client<br />

assessment and treatment, across various populations and settings.<br />

Students explore pertinent case examples, plan and implement<br />

simulated music therapy processes, and cultivate resources for<br />

future use. (Prerequisites: MUSC 391, PSY 324)<br />

MTR 202 Music Therapy Principles II (3)<br />

An in-depth examination of medical practices in music therapy,<br />

in which music experiences and therapeutic relationships promote<br />

physiological well being. (Prerequisites: BIO 100/103, BIO 104)<br />

MTR 203 Music Therapy Principles III (3)<br />

An in-depth examination of psychotherapeutic practices in<br />

music therapy, in which music experiences and therapeutic<br />

relationships promote mental and emotional well being.<br />

(Prerequisite: PSY 320)<br />
