Please Note: All certification candidates accepted on or after September,<br />
2009 (as CUS students) or after <strong>2010</strong> (as CLL students) must complete<br />
nine credits of special education (EDU 381, 382, 384) and three credits<br />
of teaching English language learners (EDU 290). This PDE requirement<br />
is effective for certifications awarded after January 1, 2013. Updated<br />
certification requirements follow.<br />
UPDATED CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS<br />
(effective as noted above):<br />
• Elementary/Middle Certification (grades 4-8): EDU 290,<br />
301, 302, 310, 331, 338, 341, 346, 347, 381, 382, 384. (A<br />
Middle Level concentration is a requirement with this certification.<br />
Program alignment with PDE guidelines is in process.)<br />
• Pre-K – 4th Grade Certification: EDU 290, 301, 302, 310,<br />
331, 338, 346, 347, 361, 362, 381, 382, 384.<br />
• Secondary or K-12 Certification: EDU 290, 301, 302, 310,<br />
325, 330, 381, 382, 384. Special Education is a Dual<br />
Certification. (Must be combined with another instructional<br />
area).<br />
• Special Education (Pre-K – 8) Certification (with either<br />
Elementary/Middle or Early Childhood Certification):<br />
EDU 290, 301, 302, 310, 331, 338, (341), 346, 347, (361,<br />
362), 381, 382, 383, 384, 393.<br />
• Special Education (7-12) Certification (with either K-12 or<br />
Secondary certification): EDU 290, 301, 302, 310, 325, 330,<br />
381, 382, 383, 384, 393.<br />
Note: All certification students are required to take PSY 324 as a part<br />
of the social science requirement in the program of basic studies.<br />
PDE INSTRUCTIONAL CERTIFICATION<br />
CHANGES<br />
For instructional certificates issued before JANUARY 1, 2013,<br />
the grade level limitations shall be the following:<br />
(a) Early childhood (prekindergarten through grade three or<br />
ages 3 through 8).<br />
(b) Elementary (kindergarten through grade six or ages 4<br />
through 11).<br />
(c) Special education (prekindergarten through grade 12 or up to<br />
age 21).<br />
INSTRUCTIONAL CERTIFICATES ISSUED BEFORE<br />
JANUARY 1, 2013 REMAIN VALID FOR THE TERM OF THE<br />
CERTIFICATE FOR THE GRADE SPANS AND AGE LEVELS<br />
OUTLINED ABOVE.<br />
The grade level limitations for new certificates issued after<br />
JANUARY 1, 2013, will be:<br />
(a) Early Childhood (PK through grade 4, or ages 3 through 9).<br />
(b) Elementary/Middle (grades 4 through 8, or ages 9 through 14).<br />
(c) Special Education PK-8 (PK through grade 8 or ages 3 through<br />
14) with a dual certificate in one of the following:<br />
1) Early Childhood<br />
2) Elementary/Middle<br />
(d) Special Education 7-12 (Grades 7 through 12 or ages 11<br />
through 21) with a dual certificate in a secondary (7-12)<br />
content area.<br />
FIELD EXPERIENCES AND STUDENT<br />
TEACHING<br />
A fee is charged for EDU 201, EDU 202, and EDU 203. No<br />
refund is made to anyone who withdraws from a field experience<br />
after pre-registration has been completed.<br />
EDU 201-202<br />
During the sophomore year, students observe and participate in<br />
classroom settings for one morning each week. Students are placed<br />
in a different setting each semester.<br />
EDU 203-204<br />
During the junior year, the students observe and participate in<br />
the classroom setting for one morning a week during the first<br />
semester. During the second semester students spend one day a<br />
week in the same classroom setting in which they will have their<br />
student teaching experience in the fall term of the senior year. This<br />
preliminary experience is guided and directed by the university staff<br />
in conjunction with the principals and teachers of the cooperating<br />
schools. Students are responsible for their own transportation.<br />
EDU 325 or EDU 346 Student Teaching Experience:<br />
First semester of senior year: full-time, daily experience<br />
(Students in the College of <strong>Undergraduate</strong> Studies). (Students in<br />
College of LifeLong Learning may student teach either in the Fall<br />
or Spring). (Students are responsible for their own transportation.)<br />
Students spend full time in the schools during the time of<br />
Student Teaching. During this time the student teachers participate<br />
in a weekly seminar conducted by members of the university staff.<br />
Through lectures and discussions led by local school personnel, the<br />
prospective teachers are given the opportunity to become familiar<br />
with their professional obligations and benefits. Current trends in<br />
curricula and methods are considered and explained.A fee is<br />
charged for Student Teaching. No refund is made to anyone who<br />
withdraws from student teaching after pre-registration has been<br />
completed for this assignment.<br />
Applications for student teaching must be made by October 15<br />
prior to student teaching (Fall semester of junior year for College of<br />
<strong>Undergraduate</strong> Studies students). (Students in the College of<br />
LifeLong Learning must make their application for Spring student<br />
teaching in early January and in early September for Fall student<br />
teaching).<br />
Special Education: Students are required to complete a 30-hour<br />
practicum during EDU 383 (ordinarily second semester of senior year).<br />
TEACHER CERTIFICATION<br />
All teacher education programs, elementary, early childhood,<br />
special education, and secondary, offered at <strong>Immaculata</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />
have been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.<br />
Graduates who have successfully completed an approved program<br />
and have been recommended by <strong>Immaculata</strong> <strong>University</strong> are eligible<br />
for a Pennsylvania Certificate to teach. Students not recommended<br />
for certification may appeal through the Campus Review<br />
Committee.<br />
All College of LifeLong Learning and transfer students seeking<br />
certification should contact the appropriate advisor in the Education<br />
Department on admittance.<br />
<strong>Immaculata</strong> <strong>University</strong> makes every effort to help a student<br />
prepare to teach in a state other than Pennsylvania. The student is<br />
responsible for ascertaining the requirements of that state.<br />
BA/MA PROGRAM<br />
Students who graduate with certification and a GPA of 3.5 may<br />
pursue a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. The program<br />
must be begun within one year of graduation.<br />
