BIOL 335 Principles of Physiology (4)<br />

A biophysical approach to the functioning of selected body<br />

systems related to movement, information processing, sensory<br />

discrimination, regulation, and control. Prerequisites: Foundation<br />

Courses (MATH 207-08 or MATH 301-302, CHE 103-104, and<br />

BIOL 233-234 or BIOL 209-210); or permission of instructor. 3<br />

hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory. (See PHY 335)<br />

BIOL 366 Molecular Biology (4)<br />

The structure and function of the gene at the molecular level in<br />

prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Study will focus on gene function,<br />

transcription in prokaryotes, operons, transcription regulation in<br />

eukaryotes, posttranscriptional events, translation, and the<br />

enzymology of DNA replication. Laboratory will focus on molecular<br />

cloning methods as well as tools for studying genes and gene activity.<br />

Prerequisites: Foundation Courses (MATH 207-08 or MATH 301-<br />

302, CHE 103-104, and BIOL233-234 or BIOL209-210); or<br />

permission of the instructor. 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory<br />

BIOL 391 Biological Research I (3)<br />

Students meeting certain academic requirements are invited to<br />

conduct a research project under the supervision of a biology<br />

faculty member. Prerequisites: Foundation Courses (MATH 207-08<br />

or MATH 301-302, CHE 103-104, and BIOL 233-234 or BIOL<br />

209-210), 3 credits in BIOL 291, and permission of department.<br />

6 hours field/laboratory.<br />

BIOL 392 Biological Research II (3)<br />

Continuation of BIOL 391. Prerequisite BIOL 391. 6 hours<br />

field/laboratory.<br />

BIOL 395 Senior Seminar (2)<br />

In this capstone seminar, students will write and orally present a<br />

formal scientific report presenting the results of a laboratory/field<br />

project performed in a previous course or as an approved, on or off<br />

campus, independent research project. The report will include the<br />

development of the hypothesis supported by a comprehensive<br />

literature review, a description of the experimental protocol, and a<br />

presentation and an analysis of the data collected. Prerequisites: 16<br />

credits in biology 300 level courses and BIOL 320, or permission of<br />

department. (2 hours lecture)<br />

SCI 122 Earth and Space Science (3)<br />

An introduction to the origin and evolution of the universe and<br />

the solar system, the structure and dynamics of Earth, and past and<br />

current explorations on land, beneath the sea, and in outer space.<br />

(Fulfils a core requirement.) On-line. Counts 2 hours lecture, 2<br />

hours laboratory.<br />
