Continuation of pronunciation and basic elements of grammar<br />

through oral and written exercises. Laboratory work required.<br />

(Prerequisite: SPAN 101 or instructor’s approval)<br />

SPAN 103 Intermediate Spanish I (3)<br />

Emphasis on review, expansion, and application of grammar,<br />

vocabulary, and pronunciation through listening, speaking, reading,<br />

and writing exercises. Discussion of geography and culture of<br />

Spain and Latin America. Laboratory work required.<br />

SPAN 104 Intermediate Spanish II (3)<br />

Continuation of review, expansion, and application of grammar,<br />

vocabulary, and pronunciation through listening, speaking, reading,<br />

and writing exercises. Discussion of geography and culture of<br />

SPAN 150 Spanish for Medical Personnel (3) (Offered also<br />

Basic communication skills for those involved in medicine,<br />

nursing, and allied medical services in the Hispanic community.<br />

Emphasis on functional, situational conversation and elementary<br />

grammar.<br />

SPAN 151 Spanish for Pastoral Ministry (3) (Offered in the<br />

I.H.M. Formation Academic Program)<br />

Basic communication skills for those working within the context<br />

of pastoral ministry in the Hispanic community. Emphasis on<br />

functional, situational conversation and elementary grammar.<br />

SPAN 152 Intermediate. Spanish/Medical Personnel (3)<br />

An intensive course designed to advance the language<br />

proficiency of those working in the medical field. (Prerequisite:<br />

SPAN 101/150 or instructor’s approval)<br />

SPAN 160 Spanish/Consumer Services I (3)<br />

Basic communication skills for those in the service industry.<br />

Emphasis on cultural sensitivity and functional conversation. This is<br />

the foundation course for SPAN 161 and SPAN 162. Offered only<br />

through corporate training opportunities.<br />

SPAN 161 Spanish/Consumer Services II (3)<br />

This is a continuation of SPAN 161. Basic communication skills<br />

will be further developed through oral and situational exercises.<br />

Emphasis on cultural sensitivity and the importance of customer<br />

service. Offered only through corporate training opportunities.<br />

(Prerequisite: SPAN 160)<br />

SPAN 162 Spanish/Consumer Services III (3)<br />

Students will be challenged to effectively communicate with<br />

customers and associates in basic work-related situations.<br />

Communication skills will be further developed through oral and<br />

situational exercises while emphasizing cultural sensitivity and the<br />

importance of customer service. Offered only through corporate<br />

training opportunities. (Prerequisites: SPAN 160, 161)<br />

SPAN 201 Adv. Intermediate Spanish I (3)<br />

Contemporary overview of Spanish language, syntax, and<br />

grammar with materials selected for exploring Hispanic culture.<br />

Emphasis on development of student autonomy in Spanish,<br />

especially in speaking and writing. Laboratory work required.<br />

SPAN 202 Adv. Intermediate Spanish II (3)<br />

Continuation of contemporary overview of Spanish language,<br />

syntax, and grammar with materials selected for exploring Hispanic<br />

culture. Emphasis on development of student autonomy in Spanish,<br />

especially in speaking and writing. Laboratory work required.<br />

(Prerequisite: SPAN 201 or instructor’s approval)<br />

SPAN 300 Crossing Borders: Hispanic Women’s Images<br />

in the U.S. (3)<br />

Topics concerning Hispanic females in the U.S., the restrictions<br />

imposed on them by the roles ascribed by American society, and<br />

how they adapt to or rebel against such limitations. Themes of<br />

exile, machismo, marginalization, integration and freedom will be<br />

explored. Students will be able to contrast and compare their own<br />

experiences in American society with those of the many Latin-<br />

American cultures in the United Sates in order to discover a<br />

universal global female experience. The course will be conducted<br />

in English. Students may receive credit for Spanish 300, with<br />

approval from the department, only if written assignments are<br />

submitted in Spanish (offered on-line).<br />

SPAN 303 Advanced Composition (3)<br />

Advanced study and practice in the Spanish language to enhance<br />

written proficiency. The reading of texts from a variety of sources<br />

will serve as a point of departure for class discussion and written<br />

assignments. (Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or instructor’s approval).<br />

Offered in alternate years.<br />
