MTR 300 Music Therapy Practicum (1-3)<br />

A supervised clinical field training experience in music therapy,<br />

in various settings. Students have the opportunity to apply various<br />

principles, skills, and resources acquired through course work, as<br />

well as to develop new skills and resources. Students work under<br />

the supervision of both an on-site music therapist and university<br />

music therapy faculty. A weekly clinical training forum provides<br />

students with opportunities to share experiences, address problems<br />

and issues, and exchange peer support. Students document the<br />

practicum in a professional report (presented at the culmination of<br />

the semester), and record their personal experiences in self-inquiry<br />

logs. Each student must complete a minimum of three practica<br />

(each featuring a different client population), at 1 credit each (3<br />

credits total), for a minimum of 50 clinical training hours per<br />

semester (150 hours total). With permission of the department,<br />

students may complete more than one practicum within a given<br />

semester (with permission of the department). Prerequisites: MUSC<br />

232, 233, 236, 210; MTR (under certain exceptional circumstances,<br />

with permission of the department, students may take MTR 300<br />

concurrently with, or prior to, MTR 200). (Fee: $75 each time<br />

student registers regardless of the number of credits; normally<br />

student will register for 1 cr per semester.)<br />

self-inquiry logs. Each student must complete a minimum of two<br />

semesters of internship (approximately six months in total,<br />

combined duration), at 2 credits each (4 credits total), and must<br />

accrue a minimum total of 900 clinical training hours combined<br />

over all semesters elected). By special arrangement and with the<br />

permission of the department, internship may be completed on a<br />

part-time basis over three semesters (approximately one year in<br />

total, combined duration), at 2 credits each (6 credits total).<br />

Prerequisites: MTR 201, 202, 203, 300 (3 credits); all music therapy<br />

course grades at C or higher; demonstration of functional<br />

proficiency on piano, guitar, and voice at a level suitable for entry<br />

into internship. (Fee: $75 each time student registers regardless of<br />

the number of credits; normally student will register for 2 cr per<br />

semester.)<br />

MTR 401 Music Therapy Special Topics (1-6)<br />

Individual reading, research, and presentation of a topic or<br />

development of a special project on an independent basis, under the<br />

direction of music therapy faculty.<br />

MTR 400 Music Therapy Internship (1-6)<br />

An extended, intensive, clinical field training experience<br />

featuring one or more client population(s) and/or setting(s).<br />

Students continue to work under both on-site and academic<br />
